<span class="storybody">Where he fits could be a matter of opinion, Green a career spread-system QB now looking at a lot of teams which don't run the spread at all. If it's just college he's looking at, Green said that this wouldn't be an issue, but it becomes one if you start thinking about the NFL. "Teams in the NFL don't run that kind of offense. They have elements of it, but it's mostly "West Coast" and systems like that," he said. "It's one of those things where if you are seriously looking at the NFL you have to take into consideration. NFL teams just don't go after quarterbacks who run the spread in college."</span>

For the record, I don't think there's any way in hell we get him, but I thought it was a nice quote.

I think if I were him, I'd be looking at schools with a history of placing QB's in the NFL, not a school with a particular offense, but hey, don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

Apparently wants to be a vet or some sort of wildlife/fisheries major and loves to hunt & fish from what I read on the BDJ recruiting board. I'm as surprised as anyone, but this guy seems to be high on MSU.

after giving his word to Croom, he will go home, pray and determine he should in fact go back on that word and go to LSU.

because this class is shaping up pretty damn nicely on the O side so far. It appears that the lazy days of yore are ending. Croom apparently has a fire under his ***.

How much longer are you going to continue to carry the banner of Croom hatred? or at least Croom derision?

Peaches doesn't like Croom or Stansbury. Hell, if Croom took us to the Sugar Bowl next year, C34 would *****.

we havent signed a damn player yet in this class. Talk to me about it in Febuary.

I dont have Crooms hatred. I want Crooms to get a 17'ing offense. I'll say this aGAIN for the 20th time- I believe Crooms can be a successful SEC coach if he will back off the offense and get a good OC

If there is one advantage of running the WCO, this is it. It increases our chances of getting a competent QB, espcially with everyone wanting to run the magical spread offense.

A big reason why the WCO offense has had trouble at MSU is because we have lacked a competent QB that can run it- the coaching staff probably quit a little too soon on Omarr Conner as a QB, and Henig just flat out sucked or was hurt, and his replacements were horrible. Now we have Wes Carroll who I thought managed our offense very well for a true Fr. just by the simple fact that he took care of the ball for the most part.

I think Croom's "plan" was to build our defense, and ST (mixed success here, but we did improve overall last year, thanks to firing Amos Jones), build our o-line, and now he's trying to bring in the skill people in that we need to compete every Sat in the fall. So, we'll see how that all happens.

I don't have a problem with implementing aspects of the west coast offense, but I just don't like it to be the whole offensive system for a college program. Kind of run it like Auburn did when Borgess was there... that seemed to work great.

However, Green seems to be a smart kid. So many of these teams that are going to pass happy offenses with their offensive lineman standing straight up the whole snap cadence are winning now, but many of their players (outside of WR) are not getting drafted because nobody knows if they can run an NFL system (i.e. Hawaii QB) Heck, vince young was one of the best college players I've ever seen and he still hasn't really come accustomed to NFL offenses yet.

that is part of the problem to-we are trying to run too much of it, and we really should focus on about 30 pass plays and 30 running plays, and then the basic goal line stuff, Hail Mary play, and the other misc. like the Victory formation.

I'll be honest, if we're going to run the WCO, I want us to bring in Borges to run it. He is a pretty good OC.

I think Croom's philosophy on running a practice, setting a game plan, etc., is what his version of the west coast offense is. It has been a couple of years but there has been discussion that State doesn't run a true WCO from an actual playing specific calling standpoint. The real WCO is an entire program in the way you do things and not just an "offensive attack" and specific plays.

Apparently there are two versions of the WCO- the Sid Gillman and Don Coryell version, which places more of an emphasis on the deep vertical passing game and the Bill Walsh one- which basically reporters labeled as the WCO despite Walsh's protests, I guess because of the 49ers/Stanford connection, which emphasizes more short horizontal passes and a controlled ground attack based on down and distance.

I guess that's no more confusing than the West Virginia spread and the Hawaii spread.</p>

The "true" or original WCO was the Sid Gillman version which was your basic 1970's vertical passing offense. Bill Walsh's offense is totally different in every way, shape, and form. His was really taken from his days in Cincy under Paul Brown. Reporters just called it the WCO because, as you stated, his offense came into fame on the West Coast.

Croom took his offense, theoretically, from the Green Bay variation of the WCO, which uses more I formation power running than Walsh's system. Whereas Walsh used the short passing game to set up the run, and used misdirection and small, agile OL in the place of a power running game, Holmgren used big OL and RBs and ran right at you. What Croom runs in reality is more of a old school Alabama take on that offense, meaning defense and power running game first and passing a distant 3rd. Again, though, his big problem has been his playcaller, a problem he refuses to acknowlege and rectify.
