I invited you fishing over on Nafoom and Lewis Nixon Did some back porch, psycho analysis on me. I would like your quasi informed analysis of his diagnosis and your thoughts.

I think that the difference between you and Hemingway is that Hemingway wanted to do what you do, but actually needed the audience that his writing brought him. You KNOW that you have a small circle of friends... alternatively thought everybody and nobody liked him. My guess is that you drink because you enjoy drinking and getting a buzz. Hemingway drank to control his (probably) bi-polar disorder. His deep sea fishing escapades were impulsive reactions to modern life. It is your orientation to the world.

I doubt very seriously that your choice of profession is pathological, but it does give you a place in which you are sovereign and indisputable. I think a lot of us want that.

Since when did fishing ,drinking sometimes before breakfast, and being a lazy *** bastard become a profession?

Seriously, I didn't think I was as fugged up as Ole Lewis feared.

the way to cope with bipolar disorder is drinking? (Not serious)

I will say this: I wish I was able to have enough indisposable resources and income to say "screw the world, I'm going fishing" whenever I wanted to.

that keeps me posting on NAFOOM. Just like your wry commentary made it mandatory that I eventually end up here from time to time.

I'm not sure who determines exactly what is and isn't professional, but I assume that you don't fit this category.

Fisher Folk

I see you as more of a Zimzala type.

his daughter, their flamboyant and excessive lifestyles, and their extreme lability, I would not hesitate to suggest that they were all bi-polar. The notion of using alcohol to self-medicate everything from panic attacks to schizophrenia to bi-polar disorder is well-known in clinical circles. (Often, we ask about drinking, not to establish a substance abuse disorder, but to determine the level of self-medication and conversely the severity of the disorder.)

As to this statement... I concur.

"That's Hilaire Belloc, " I said to my friend. "Ford was here this afternoon and cut him dead."
"Don't be a silly ***, " my friend say. "That's Alestair Crowley, the diabolist. He's supposed to be the wickedest man in the world."
"Sorry, " I said

A. So if Fidel showed up and wanted to try to get the Silver King would you take him with you or send him off to see Mark Sosin? What if Barack was with him?

and 2. So you are saying that when Papa supposedly downed those 16 double daquiris at the El Floridita, he was masking a mood disorder and not merely lubricating his imagination, and therefore if I drink mysef into a stupor this Fall to medicate the pain I feel from having to watch....oh, I don't know....say another anemic offense, I can qualify for ssi/disability?

I am convinced that a clinically deviant syndrome of some sort is requisite to be a "life long" fan of either Ole Miss or Mississippi State. I think that Ole Miss fans tend toward Uni-Polar depressions or schizophrenia's marked by grandiose delusions, while State fans are more likely to have Bi-Polar disorder or Schizophrenia's characterized by persecutory delusions. Massive amounts of alcohol are pallative measures for each group.
