Saw this articleand it started a debate at work. Wondered what you guys think.<div>
</div><div>A summary for those who don't follow Tennessee football or for those who don't want to read the entire article:</div><div>
</div><div>Alcoa is a 3A school that has won 43 straight games, 7 straight titles, and has beaten top 6A schools, including the current 6A champ last year. Teams are so afraid of playing Alcoa that the current 2A state champ requested a move to 4A instead of 3A when their enrollment was going to force them to move up in classification. The current 1A state champ is playing 9 games instead of 10 this year, because they couldn't find anyone to fill their open date except Alcoa and their coach admitted he wanted no part of Alcoa.</div><div>
</div><div>So the question...more pussification of America or smart move by these coaches to avoid Alcoa? Maybe South Panola vs. Alcoa match-up someday?</div>

On one hand you want your team to play the best teams in the state to see how you measure up. You may even knock 'em off every now and then. By saying you're not playing them b/c of how awesome they are and how afraid you are of your team getting reamed, then you can make the pussification argument
On the other hand, they have in essence a competitive advantage bc of the $500 transfer fee, allowing them to get the best players. Why would you want to play them when you know this already? It's smart not to play Alcoa b/c your team has no chance.

it's pussified because even if they whip your ***, I think it makes your team better to play the best teams they can.

But it's also really smart if that loss could put you out of contention for a state title in your classification

I'd also look at what they do internally to get their players in such good shape, and start recruiting the best players in TN to come play at my school. Hell, if it's only $500 and you can talk some stud LB from the next county over to come play for you, why not? It's apparently legal in TN.

If they are already consistently playing and beating the best in 6A, why would they still want to compete in 3A. I guess they want the spoils of beating the biggest teams but don't want to take the chance on breaking their championship streak in their current 3A division. Pretty ***** move by Alcoa in my book, especially scheduling 1A schools (even if they were the 1A champs).

They moved from 2A to 3A in 2010. They probably should move for competition, they haven't lost in class since 2003. They have averaged beating schools in their class by over 30 since 2003.<div>
</div><div>I think Alcoa enjoys cruising through the year (they put up 91 in a playoff game a few years back) and only worries about the Maryville game and the state championship. Like I posted earlier, I would love to see them play South Panola.</div><div>

From the article:
Last year’s Class 2A state champion, Signal Mountain, was moved up one classification by the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association because of a 20 percent enrollment increase. But the Eagles chose to take yet another step up, to Class 4A, in order to be in a different playoff bracket than Alcoa.
