How does portal madness change recruiting tactics?

Most coaches will spout some line about recruiting being about building relationships. And there's the age-old recruiting line: "We want the players who want to be here."

Has portal and NIL changed all that though? Do coaches even bother worrying about that anymore? It's very clear relationships do NOT matter anymore. No coach in America puts more emphasis on relationship than Beamer, and we've seen what that's worth to players. Is it simply a matter of: are you willing to at least be on our roster for next season in exchange for x dollars?

In this new era, what do we have to offer recruits if relationship is meaningless? We can't offer competitive money. We can't offer a chance to compete for titles.

Even marginal players are looking for a pay day.

It's no different in the real world. I give you two choices.

1- work for a great boss at the company you are currently working. Making a little bit of coin at a mediocre company.

2- work for a good boss at a new company making a lot more money and a more successful company.

Which are you choosing? No penalties for leaving company #1.

Yeah and to top it off, we all know as (mostly) seasoned adults that the green grass on the other side of the road isn't what it looks to be, but these kids are a much easier sell. I don't like this at all. Is there currently no limit on NIL? Heck you might as well throw out the 85 scholarship limit too eh?

The schools that have more to spend can't offer everyone. Their 85 will just be more highly paid than ours. Doesn't mean you can't win. Go ask the Mets, Yankees and Dodgers about overpaying while watching the Rays go farther than them in the playoffs.

It will be interesting to watch where the players that have played and contributed that enter the portal are from.

One thought is does a player being from SC and the ties and more importantly less travel for the family to see them play aid in keeping them here?

Of course Burch really disproved that theory by going all the way to Oregon and of course if Nick and DJ enter the portal then the numbers are starting to stack against that approach/idea having any merit.

A lot of these guys' families are given special travel arrangements...either stipends or use of a plane. My guess is Nyck's family doesn't have to worry about travelling to Cola to watch him.

Counting the players entering the portal, THUS FAR THIS YEAR, we have had about 50 players enter the portal in 3 years. Is that abnormally high? Sure seems like a lot to me.
