I've not been in the building in over 20 years but I understand that the FMA has two basketball floors, one for MBB and one for WBB. It seems like facilities are not the issue.

There's a particular person who posted - or posts - on the previous FGF board - a self-styled basketball expert, which he might be. This individual declared that our repurposed basketball practice and support facility, formerly our arena, does not measure up to the freestanding buildings being built in other places. I think UConn was specifically mentioned. I'm sure we have people who stop by here who can comment authoritatively.

What does a "contemporary" practice facility need that the Coliseum doesn't already have?

You'd have to ask that person or someone equally as conversant on the subject. I can't even remember his handle at the moment but he traveled a lot to follow our basketball teams. Diehard Gamecock - I remembered.

Talking with people our facilities are in the top percentile of the SEC. Maybe UK has one a little better but overall our basketball, football and other facilities rank in the top percentile of the SEC and other conferences.

I've been in the coliseum in it's current state and it's pretty drab. The building is super old and dusty, and the ONLY place they've put any money in the past decade is in the main hall itself. All that really is is some tarps and banners hanging up around the mentioned practice courts. At least the courts are new. (Fun fact, the FMA floor from the 90's is in one of the gyms at the Blatt.) The weight room at the coliseum also reminds me of my high school's. It was just small and kinda dirty. None of it has the "shine" of the football, baseball, or even softball facilities which have all been built in recent years.
I get what people say when they complain about Basketball practice facilities. I would compare it to how our football practice facilities were in the Holtz era.

I'm of the opinion that the money that would be required to bring the coliseum up to par for a practice facility would cost as much as just building a new stand alone practice facility.

Such a shame that it's drab. I really liked the original tartan floor.
