How the top 4 would have looked this year under the expansion format

In that format, the top 4 conference champions are seeded 1-4, in order of CFP ranking. This year, that would have been:

1. UGA
2. Michigan
3. Clemson
4. Utah

So the top 4 in the cfp ranking after the conference championship games are played arent the ones that recieve byes?
If what you say is true, that's screwed up. Say that ain't right.

Per this article: "The 12-team format will feature, in order, the top four conference champions, followed by some combination of the top six at-large bids and two highest-ranked remaining conference champions. Teams will be ordered based on the College Football Playoff rankings."

I misunderstood that too, originally. I thought it was just taking the top 12 and seeding them. But it's apparently rewarding the top 4 conference Champs.

Did a little more reading on it. The system will be set up so that upsets are inevitable. By placing a team like Clemson this year at number three or Utah this year at number four you virtually guarantee at least one second round upset. The upsets will then justify having an expanded playoff because “hey, lower ranked seeds are bearing higher ranked seeds.” Some folks will be dumb enough to buy into it and say “I knew all along teams outside the top four could knock off one of the top four teams. “

If that's the case, you've already debunked it.

I just dont get why a committee feels it falls on them to reward anyone for anything. I mean those teams just won their conference. They get recognized for that and get a sweet trophy for their effort. End of story.
This is not rocket science.
Start ranking the teams mid season.
When the dust settles, you have a ranking to get your top 12 from. Seed in the order of rank.
The impression I get is the powers that be are doing their best to stay relevant and keep themselves in the spotlight... to the point of looking rediculus.

It ought to be the 12 highest ranked teams using a clear set of matrices known to everybody. Conference Championships should not alone qualify any team for anything. People claim to want a scramble. Well, give 'em a scramble.

I agree. Top 12 and done.

Has there ever been a season in the CFP where the top 4 teams were conference champions?

Agree. What's the point of even having the CFP rankings when the final seedings will be based on other arbitrary criteria?

I agree. That would only be right. They dont do right. But given they will throw in what will probably be one or two conference champs not in the top 12, ranking them at the bottom of the 12 is about the closest we are gonna get to that. Of course that's gonna screw the real 11 and 12 or whatever, but screwing teams when they shouldnt have to is kinda what they do.
