Tied for 2nd Courtney Brown and Lavar Arrington '99 season, then 4th M.Rob 2005 season.

Honorable mention: Trace and Saquon 2017 (Fighting thru the sanctions), and multiple players from'94 (The greatest team in my opinion)

*** I left John C out because he won the Heisman and his was the greatest campaign.

Lydell Mitchell set NCAA record for touchdowns in 1971. Perhaps a better season than Cappy’s.

KiJana Carter’s ‘94 season while basically only playing 3 quarters per game.
Many forget John Cappelletti won the Heisman despite missing one game with an injury. His team went undefeated and won their bowl game.

His numbers were 1,522 yards on 286 carries and 17 TDs. Carter’s were 1,539 yards on 198 carries and 23 TDs. If Carter carries 286 times he likely ends up with about 2,300+ yard and another ten TDs. Both great seasons but Cater’s was remarkable.

Remember that the entire offense was built around Cappy. Everyone knew he was getting the ball. We had some nice wideouts and a decent quarterback that year, but not the cast that played when Kijana played. The game was different then. Kijana was great, but Cappy was special. To this day he would be my starting TB. Mike Reid would be my starting DT. Onkotz would be at LB. We were blessed with great players in those years.

Is it fair to say that Coach Paterno’s decisions cost both Johnson and Carter the Heisman Trophy?
Joe let Johnson stay in the last game of his terrific season after the half against Michigan State, even though Penn State was up huge. That allowed Larry to post gigantic numbers and go over 2,000 yards. That was very unlike Joe to humiliate an opponent who had already given up, just so a player could pad his stats.

I think it IS fair to say that, even with the notable exception of letting LJ Jr. run wild in that last game against MSU.

it’s also fair to say that taking the foot off the gas against Indiana in 94 went a long way toward costing PSU the national championship.

These things were frustrating for sure — but I’ll take ‘em, given all the good things we did get with Joe.

1994 was ridculous. After beating a ranked OSU 63-7 PSU fell from 1 to 2.
An interesting note to that is two press members from the state of Ohio actually dropped Penn State in their poll votes after they torched tOSU. I guess that was just a coincidence?

I am editing this post to correct the record as explained here -

"How was the final champion decided? By the AP and coaches polls. In the link below, you will see how Big 10 AP voters overwhelmingly voted Nebraska as the number 1 team in 1994, including all four (4) Ohio writers, despite their home state team getting absolutely murdered by Penn State during the season. Interestingly enough, when a similar situation arose in 1997 with Michigan and Nebraska, the Big 10 voters showed almost uniform solidarity with Michigan and the National Title was split that year."

It may have cost the team a national championship in 94 also. He took his foot off the gas too early.

This is why any system is better than one dictated by the votes of petty media wonks.

Forgive me if I'm overly harsh, but that '99 defense gave up two score 4th quarter leads in all three losses.

And before you say "but they got no support from the offense".... that's what elite defenses do. See 1986.

I'm sorry, but that '99 defense under performed based on the talent they had on the field. I'll grant you that the UM loss that year was partially on the refs: blatant UM holding throughout their last 2 drives.... but still......

Correct and then Carter would have most likely had better numbers than Salaam and won the Heisman.
