I consider myself a foodie but I’ve never eaten morels. I really need to have some. When my wife and I were in Missoula Montana last summer, there was a women selling morels at a farmers market. She must have had a couple dozen paper plates full of morels.

If you Sautee lightly, with a little butter, salt and pepper. To me it tastes like the finest cut of veal

What is the trick to finding them? Do they prefer certain types of forrests? Only grow neear water?

So many variables. Weather, Temperature, Light exposure. But from my experience. Elm trees, apple trees, dead and or alive. Mid 60's the weather has been in for at least a week. Apparently the ground needs to be in the 50's for them to grow. This is based on only finding them in the Commonwealth of PA. May differ in other areas.

Hey GSPs. Schuylkill county person here. They like moist soil and if you can find an old logging "landing", your gold. Wait for a very warm day (Thursday this week?) and you're set. I always bring my kids because the are very hard to see in the camouflage of the leaves. My saying is they are always done by Mother's day in this area. Good luck, as they are delicious! Try Hen of the Woods Mushrooms this summer.

Thanks for the tips. I may give it a try. Apparently my grandma Grace knew how to identify all kinds of edible wild mushrooms. She died when I was young so there was no chance to learn from her. My mom hated mushrooms, maybe from eating too many of them during the depression when they didn't have meat.

My only $.02, do some extensive research because it can be a deadly hobby. But it can be very rewarding as far as spending time in the woods and great eating!
