If the 12-team playoff started this year, we’d be facing a first-round rematch with Michigan.

Thoughts?

What we know is 2 losses will take you out of the top 4, and a conference championship win will move you ahead of teams that don’t make their championship game, regardless of the strength of schedule or the strength of the conference or the number of losses (with the exception of OSU). Those metrics need to be dumped and a team’s record in light of its strength of schedule must replace it.

The top 4 teams get a bye. Going by the current top 12, we'd play USC.
Ah, yeah. You are, of course, correct. We’d be spared the immediate Stone Cold ***-whuppin’.

I certainly wouldn’t fear USC nearly as much.

On Sunday afternoon, ESPN had slotted us in to have a rematch with OSU in the hypothetical first round.

Way to put in the effort with that great explanation. Couldn't even be bothered to add a link. How would we have a rematch with OSU when OSU is in the top 4?
Top 4 seeds get a bye:

1 - Georgia
2 - Michigan
3 - Clemson
4 - Utah

5 - TCU home against #12 Tulane
6 - Ohio State home against #11 Penn State
7 - Alabama home against #10 USC
8 - Tennessee home against #9 Kansas State

Here is the key point to understanding the seedings: The TOP 4 RANKED CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS each get a bye. There are going to be some eyes opened when this thing takes effect in 2024 and a team like TCU (12-1) has to play an extra game while a team like Utah (3 losses) gets an opening round bye.

This is not my opinion. This is EXACTLY how it would look based upon Sunday's final CFP rankings.

My concern with this model is that the committee will ensure northern schools, with the potential for bad weather, will be ranked to ensure the weather doesn’t impact the outcome of the game. Instead, they’ll have southern teams host the first round thus giving them the advantage. Hope that doesn’t happen but you at see it. Even if it wasn’t intended, there will be speculation.

If the 12-team playoff started this year, Penn State would be ranked 13th

Thank you. I didn't know they were giving a preference like that to the conf champ. I was just going by the current top12 in the CFP poll.

You are welcome and I should have gone into more detail, but I was in a hurry to get some other things done this morning.

most people are assuming it is top 12. you will see teams not in top 12 get in. when the 12 team idea was first hatched it was only discussed as the top 12 ranked teams. all the discussion was how could the next 8 compete when 3/4 often get blown out. now we may see a #20 in the playoff. you could #10 and not make it.

I wonder if that wrinkle was to stop SEC and BIG expansion?
