A friend of mine had a gator in his family's lake north of Canton that did a similar thing. During a drought one year, it up and walked a couple of miles through the piney woods to a nearby catfish pond and cleaned it out. The owners were pissed to say the least.

I admit I have a phobia about gators but I really see no need for alligators of that size (and smaller) to exist, especially around humans.
