No matter which side of the argument the posters in the Carter thread were on, most showed a high level of competence in complicated historical matters.

Some of the Panama Canal comments led me down an hours long rabbit trail.

Just think, someone in California or the Northeast that just learned Carter was a president thinks they are better than you because you are from Mississippi.

If you were a student at State in the mid-80s, you would have have had the opportunity to take a class from Congressman David Bowen who was one of the House folks who helped put the treaty bills through the House (not that it needed much help there since it was solidly Democratic at the time).

The day I graduated from MSU, the big foreign policy news dealt with Bush 41 wanting to get Manuel Noriega out of power in Panama.

And you have news articles about it beginning with STARKVILLE, MISSISSIPPI…

I remember being afraid that the Panama crisis would cause Bush to cancel and send Dan Quayle as our commencement speaker

Thread hijack…. Seeing the headline from Starkville re Panama crisis made me think about Dr Janos Radvanyi, longtime History Professor at MSU. At the time of his defection from the Soviet bloc, he was was the highest ranking official to do so. All other schools were afraid to hire him, but we hired him and he brought tons of connections with him. Dude had personal relationships with Kruschev, Ho Chi Menh, etc. Upon coming to MSU he brought different lectures to campus from a national security perspective, and stayed very involved in international affairs.

I was reliably told by a former Bush 41 official that when the Soviet Union began falling apart, much of the best information the White House received was from a fax machine in Starkville (Radvanyi’s)

Good point. It takes a while for history to be written as consequences play out and the truth becomes more clear as political spin fades away. Arguments during an administration are terribly blinded by ideology and politics as team sport.

I think discussions on administrations through GWB have enough history to be meaningful. Obama’s term still has some ripening to do.
