I see the SEC is strongest conference, I think I know why.

At least one of the reasons. I'm watching the Kentucky and Florida game and the phrase. I hear over and over that just about any player they say something about that makes a play in this game transferred in from another non-SEC school they played last year. Is this just the conference of transfers? Enquiring minds want to know. LOL

I think CBB is still all about the coaches. Yes, you need the players, and the portal allows you quick access to players, but it takes a good coach to find the right players and mesh them into a winning team.

The SEC has been helping schools hire good coaches, as well as steering them away from problem coaches.

In 2016, the SEC got 3 schools into the NCAA tournament. Sankey then hired former Big East Commissioner Mike Tranghese as a basketball consultant, who then hired Dan Leibovitz as SEC basketball czar.

Together, they have built this monster. They have worked with the schools and tweaked scheduling with an eye toward maximizing RPI. Bigger than that, though, they have been very hands on with every coaching vacancy over the last 7 years.

There's been a lot of money spent on facilities in the league over the last several years as well.

You think football is bad, there is ZERO school loyalty in basketball. Or maybe 20% max. It’s just easier to ignore because of smaller rosters, and because it’s been this way for well over a decade once we started having one and dones. AAU was always in the background too. All about coaches and incentives.

So yeah, transfers can come in from areas that actually know how to play basketball. And football money has helped land some good coaching.

Yes I feel like transfers have been the norm in basketball for a long time. I mean, our last SEC champion squad started at least two and that was 21 years ago. I want to say we’ve started games in the last couple of years with 1 high school signee, though I could be wrong about that.
Transfers have been at least as prevalent in the women’s game.
Football is about to be the same way, if it wasn’t already. This is the first year (for us, anyway) that I feel like we’re counting on transfers at basically every position. Part of that is the returners are bad enough to have gone 2-10, though.
