Half of me right now is extremely happy for them because I usually pull for underdogs. The other half of me is throwing up right now. It just doesn't make any sense: Fresno State CWS titles - 1 MSU CWS titles - 0

It's about time for them. I was actually surprised to hear that they had never won one.

i mean, that's obviously the problem. the font used on fresno and oregon state's jerseys has been lucky for three years in a row. and it kinda reminds me of the old "big S" baseball uni's we had back in the day. hmmm - cohen throwbacks anyone?

oregon state (last 2 titles)

I guess. MState certainly had a better baseball resume than Fresno until the past 2 weeks.

Fresno's accomplishments before this season:
3 CWS appearances
28 Conference Championships (only in WAC since 1992).
NCAA Tournament Record 56-64
NCAA Regional Record 52-58

And their team that won this year was #4 seed.

I suspect MState's resume would be much better than this one. I find it depressing that we have not won a championship and Fresno has now.

I'm sure our baseball resume is better, as ours is better than 95% of schools. But I think I read that they had been to 31 regional tournaments which is similar.

What conference were they in before?

You also have people like Pepperdine, Oregon State, Oklahoma, Georgia (yes, seriously), and Missouri that have one.

But you also have people like MSU, Florida State, and Clemson that don't.

I really think that the keys for us to win one are:

1. To go more consistently. Polk would typically would build a team that was capable of making it once every five years, but if you do that you have a team that is inexperienced as far as the CWS goes. I think experience is the most important advantage you can have in a tournament like the CWS. It's not essential- obviously look at this year's CWS Champ- but at the same time, teams that have CWS experience have a much better chance of winning it throughout history. Even our great 1985 team had players that had only been to Omaha that one time. If we had not choked in the Regionals in 1984, who knows?

2. We must recruit better. We need a combination of blue chip talent- especially pitching and then we need to have two or three guys that are blue collar, dreamed of playing baseball at MSU all their life guys. We must go outside of the south and really make some in roads in California, Texas, and Florida and then we need to protect our territory as well- Mississippi and try to get a player or two from Memphis and Louisiana. If we can find some blue chips in other places, like Missouri, then by all means we should go get them. All of our walk-ons should come from Mississippi, which I don't feel is ludicrous to say with the new rules in place.

3. A coaching staff that is commited to winning. Check. That really felt good to type.

Just did a quick wiki check.

Here are the most CWS appearances without a title:
Florida State - 19
Clemson - 11
Northern Colorado - 10
Mississippi State - 8
South Carolina - 8
North Carolina - 7
Maine - 7
Western Michigan - 6
St. John's - 6

Interesting list with some odd ball names on it.

They went to the CWS 9 times between 1952 and 1962 and then again in 1974. Prior to 1975, the country was divided into 8 districts and they took the winner from each district into the CWS. If you look at the states that would be in Northern Colorado's district, it's pretty easy to see that those aren't great baseball states. Their CWS record was something like 3-20.</p>
