In this morning's edition of The Atlanta Journal Constitution Sylvester Croom is one of 11 names mentioned for fans to vote on as a possible replacement for Bobby Petrino, who bolted yesterday for Arkansas.

Personally, I don't see this move happening, mainly because with all the turmoil the Falcons find themselves in, I expect their sights on set on a high profile NFL coach.

Of course, I could be wrong.

After practice, I asked Sly about the Atlanta situation and he said he's honored to be mentioned but that he hasn't been contacted by anyone.

"It's nice to be mentioned in those circles," he said. "I won't deny that. Being in the NFL for 17 years, a lot of those people know me. They knew me as assistant coach and as a coordinator and now they've been able to observe me as a head coach. It's an honor, and the better we get here with this program, the more those things will happen."

This entry was posted on December 12, 2007 at 10:03 am and is filed under Sports. I dont think he is dumb enough to take that job. He loves State too much for that anyways. Or am I the only one that thinks that?

Don't buy into the "Loves the team too much to leave" for any coach. If the right job were to come along, I can see Sly leaving.

Gregg, assuming Croom stays what do you feel he will get paid now that he is at the bottom of the West in salary? With just one successful season I will say close to the 1.5 million range.

Don't forget the move would reunite him with Norwood, he would have an early draft pick, an much more money. I hope he does not go, but I could not blame him either. Do not use the college coach excuse record either. He has had 17 years in the NFL. Plus, The West just got tougher. Miles and Tubby are staying. Saban will turn around Bama, Nutt to Ole Miss and Petrino to Arky. That nice ATL paycheck may start looking very intriguing and he does have alot of NFL contacts. I'm not crying Gregg, but is it okay to be slightly worried.

With his bonuses from this year, he'll be over the million mark. I say his increase will put him around $1.3 or $1.4 million.

So if he leaves, who would we get to replace him? Look at the trouble Arky and Michigan have had and they are much bigger schools than we are. We might have to go after O!

The Falcons should hire Mike Singletary. Even though it is the NFL, that team probably needs someone who will keep things under control.

I don't think Croom will retire from State. I could see him going back to the NFL in 5-10 years, but probably not as a head coach. I don't think he wants to be in the spotlight.

This should be an interesting few months. I'm not sold on Miles staying, Petrino will bolt from UPig as soon as the opportunity arises, Saban might get shot in Tuscaloosa if next year is not great, Fulmer will be on the chopping block again, Brooks is retiring, Nutt doesn't know what he just stepped into, and Tommy T is well Tommy T. Who knows with him.

If I'm Croom, I take my raise, and a decent team in MSU and see what happens in what might be a surprisingly mediocre West next year compared to Florida and Georgia.

    December 12, 2007 at 1:03 pm

The SEC as a whole might have a down year. Auburn, Tennessee, LSU, and Kentucky are looking to replace QBs. Arky will be without McFadden. Should be very interesting.

I know Tubby gets a bad rap about leaving so easily, but he just finished his 9th year at Auburn. He "appears" to be pretty happy there. It is clear the Ole Miss was a stepping stone for him and he did them wrong by the way he handled things. He seems to be committed to Auburn.

Honestly I don't think that he will leave. He loves this school, but I truly don't think that just because we have a winning season this year that Croom thinks that he is done here yet. I think he will stay because he still thinks that he has more things left to do here. But if I were Atlanta, Croom would be on the top of my list b/c….look at what he did here! He came into this program when it was NOTHING, and that it what Atl is at right now. Jerious is there, and Croom is just the man to come in and bring character back into a program that has everyone questioning it's character. The Falcons WILL BE LOOKING for someone who won't leave them high and dry like Petrino and Vick (yes….Vick left them high and dry….if he had been doing all along what he should've they would still have a QB and his butt wouldn't be in jail). Croom is the right man for the HC job at Atl, but he's staying here; and I feel extremely confident in saying that….b/c Croom is a man of character and won't leave us high and dry.

I love CC as much as the next guy, but if the money is right, he might go. With the coaches now in our division, it is going to be an uphill battle. It might be best for him to get out while he has momentum. Hopefully he will stay though.

Croom is not going anywhere. At least not this year. He's had one winning season. For him to become a hot commodity, he will have to continue the winning ways.

I want a Liberty Bowl shirt - but rather have one with the scores on it - Bulldogs takes the crown from the Knights in the Liberty Bowl.

You guys who post, "Croom loves MSU too much to leave" are kidding yourselves. I guarantee if anything at bama opens, he's the first in line. Likewise, a DC job in the pros…he's there. He may love MSU (for now) but plz get your heads out of the sand and realize that money and presitige still talks

nothillaryclinton, you are completely ridiculous. He had is written into his contract that he could not leave for Bama. He has been an offensive coach, by the way, not a DC. By the way, Coach Croom is a man of character, unlike the coach at the schools I will assume you support (scUM or Bummer)

Of course in your small world, if anyone criticizes MSU they're obviously a closet rebel.

But at least you're out of the closet on idiocy. Keep up the good work buddy, you and Gene's ilk only show the world we have some really stupid fans
