Tonight, I missed watching the Phillies game, but I was at their stadium (Citizens Bank Park) to take in a performance by Bruce Springsteen, and the E Street Band.

I've written before on BWI's boards about Bruce. While I have several friends that have been to over 100 Bruce concerts, I've never been somebody that does that. I first saw him in 1974 or 1975 (I forget which one), and have seen him periodically (around 20 times) over the years.

Tonight's concert was rescheduled from last August, when Bruce developed an ulcer issue, and had to cancel a number of concerts (including Philadelphia). It was well worth the wait.

I've never been to a concert by Bruce that wasn't enjoyable. Perhaps my memory is getting a little fuzzy about what the concerts I attended in the 70s and 80s were like; I can't say. However, tonight's concert probably was the most entertaining Bruce concert I've ever attended. He's 74-years-old, and he doesn't jump around the stage the way he use to. But his energy level is still off the charts. He played 30 songs, over somewhere between 3 hrs. - 3 hrs: 5 min.

I don't know how much longer he'll be with us, or be able to play at this level. If you enjoy his music, and have the opportunity to attend a concert of his, I would highly recommend it.

Awesome! I would love to see him one more time as well. Nothing like an evening of music you love still delivered with energy.

We went in Pittsburgh. While I am not a Bruce die hard and the first half of the concert were mainly songs I didn’t know, I was amazed at his energy level and vocals. The second half of the concert absolutely rocked. We were lucky that he played I’m on fire and Glory Days, two of my favorites. Long live the Boss!

Always a treat to see him dust of Streets of Philadelphia for Philly. Saw that this was the first time played live since 2016. Bruce has cultivated an amazing relationship with Philly over 5 decades+ and I never forget the importance that Ed Sciaky played in it.

He is the poster child of the artist who brings his recorded songs to a completely different (higher) level when he performs them live. That's a rare talent. Take the Eagles for example: great recorded songs, and when you watch them perform live, they rarely lift the enjoyment of the song to a higher level (the exception being Hotel California). But with Bruce, you really enjoy each song more in person. He has an extremely rare talent that way.

Pretty much every band Tgar has ever seen and Tgar has seen hundreds if not thousands takes live music to a more magical place than recorded music. If your sampling is Bruce and the Eagles you may have a point.

Couldn't agree more. I've only seen him 3 times, with the last one being in Pittsburgh last week. It was as much fun as I've had at any concert. Bruce and the E Street Band still rock the house as well as anybody.

Tgar has told this story before. It was back in the summer of 73 or 74 at the59th and Woolman Street Rink in Central Park during the summer concert series they held which had a lot of shows. me and my brother @Garw were in town for a couple of days to see our sister who was spending the summer in the city and we grabbed tickets to the show. Brewer and Shipley opened, that’s why we bought the tickets.

We really had no idea who Springsteen and the E street Band were at that time. We were blown away. Thousands of NY and NJ kids singing and dancing to every song, screaming the lyrics. The tickets cost $ 1.50 and we had no great expectations I believe. Little did I know we were witnessing the next big thing in rock. Have happily seen him many times since then, small venues and large.

I was there last night as well, Tom. Section 130. Really a great show - his energy level seemed to increase as the night went on - he seemed to have enough energy to play another hour. I last saw him in 1984, and his energy level is still the same.

A few people have put all, or parts of, the concert up on YouTube. I would suggest anyone who even may be a casual fan to watch the vids.

and again at Albright College in Reading in 1974, after W I & E S S came but well before Born to Run. Before Bruce became a mega act playing stadiums and arenas. Hunch Boogie Band was opening act (they were not very good) but Bruce blew the roof off the gymnasium. At the time he was being portrayed as "the new Bob Dylan" based on his song writing (at least that's how TGar described him at the time) The thing that really distinguished them in my mind was the interplay between the musicians and the sax having such a prominent role as the lead melodic sound. Infused with a real authentic roots R&B quality. Personally think that was his best musical era

I see my life flash in front of my eyes watching Bruce. I will never forget the joy of first listening to Greetings and Wild when they were released. If we listened to Spirit once, we listened to it a hundred times a night. We started going to see him in 73 and by the time Born to Run came out in 75 we were show veterans and knew the album stone cold since those songs had been played out live for a year before the album release. Most weekends we’d sniff out where he was playing and hop in the car and catch shows. The period of time leading up to Darkness was interesting. Bruce had loads of management problems and when he got back playing Darkness live, you realized he had changed. It wasn’t the free for all house party, he had turned inward and started to mature and face the issues that were underneath his exterior.

Have seen him maybe a dozen or so times more recently through the years including the tours he went out on sans E Street Band and his one man (or so) solo gigs. It’s enjoyable but different since I have 7 innings of life behind me. I saw him once at a book signing and wondered what to say. Should I tell him that he meant a lot, his songs were the soundtrack of my life, etc. All I could muster up was to say that I did a lot of inappropriate things with his music playing but enjoyed what I was doing.

I saw Bruce last spring in Greensboro and I think it was one of best concerts that I have ever been to. My wife isn't much of a fan of Bruce and knew very few of his songs and she agreed that it was a great concert.

I agree with you, but the unique talent the Eagles have in their live shows is their ability to still have the songs sound virtually identical to the album versions. In this day of "studio created improvements", it takes exceptional musicians to be able to sound as good live as in the studio versions. Though approaching their songs live quite the opposite of a Springsteen or a Dylan, the purity of the Eagles live performances is impressive. It doesn't take most of their playlist up to a higher level, but it sure nails them perfectly. And yes, "Hotel California" done live by the Eagles is always an absolute jaw dropping masterpiece. The other quite different song I also love to hear live is "Seven Bridges Road".

I went to Metallica‘s shows Fri and Sun in Minneapolis. Have been going to their shows here and there since 2000.

They still do a damn good job and I think they were better last weekend than they were the past 3 times I have seen them. They definitely were full of energy and definitely aren’t out there half assing it.

I'd have a tough time picking a favorite. There were so many great ones, and ones that I enjoyed for different reasons. @MrTailgate mentioned that Bruce broke out Streets of Philadelphia for the 1st time since 2016. Badlands is so much fun. Rosalie never disappoints. Twist and Shout is something they've been playing in their encore long before Bruce was famous, so that's a great reminder of how long and enjoyable it's been to follow them. Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out was great, especially with the photo montage of Clarence Clemons and Danny Federici. Born to Run always is great. Dancing in the Dark never disappoints. (Interestingly, I think it's the 1st time I've ever seen him perform it where he didn't bring somebody from the audience up to dance with him.) She's the One is a great song to sing along to. Because the Night was a lot of fun, in that I've seen Patti Smith perform it (if I recall correctly, Bruce wrote it, but gave it to her to sing and she had made it a big hit), and it's fun to sing along to. Spirit in the Night is always fun. Atlantic City was a great song to start things off. There really wasn't a bad song in the mix.

I believe the story of Beacause the Night is that he had it mostly written. Jimmy Iovine was working with him and Smith at the time. Bruce was doing much with the song so Iovine took the song to Smith who finished it and recorded it and had a hit with it.

could well be. I did know the details a long time ago, but now just remember the general outline of the story. Thanks

A staple early on that was always a fav of mine was Thundercrack. I can remember Vinnie Mad Dog Lopez banging away on the drums to that in the first shows I saw before Max came on board.

Another song that was a highlight of early live shows was Kitty’s Back where everyone got a turn being featured.

Kitt's Back used to be an absolute blast in the early shows. I don't think I've seen him perform it an any of the more recent Bruce concerts I attended.

Mad Dog was quite a character in the early days of the band. And Thundercrack certainly was a lot of fun.

It's hard to convince people that didn't see Bruce back before the Born To Run album that while his repertoire of songs was smaller than his current catalog, he worked every bit as hard, if not harder, in concert than he did in the 80s, 90s, etc.

Good times, and great memories

The Boss is great! Like you said, we don't know how much longer he'll be performing. In the meantime, you have to check out Billy Strings. I took in one of his shows at Bryce Jordan Center earlier thus month. He is an extraordinary talent and puts on a high energy show.

My brother had the DJ at my wedding play Thundercrack. It cleared the dance floor but pleased me immensely. It’s in my top 5 Bruce songs.
