If you could travel back in time and convince just one in-state football player who left the state play elsewhere, to come to USC, who would it be?

And why?

Was that player just so dynamic that he would’ve been a difference maker any year?

Is there a year when we were close to being really good, and a particular in-state player very well could’ve been the missing piece?

Carlos Dunlap.
Imo, it would have been enough of a blow to UF and enough of an addition for us to enable us to compete for the eastern division in 2008. And as a bonus, that could have possibly eliminated at least one of Urban Meyer's NC championships.

Thinking someone like AJ Green. Could’ve been a beast at SC under Spurrier. Especially when you consider the other WRs we had when he played. Rice, Kenny, & Green and then Jeffery and Green. My goodness.

There was a time when I wished we had Mason Rudolph as well.

Freddie Solomon, Stanley Morgan (nuff said), in my student college days…….saw Morgan vs GHS. Our all state defensive back played against Solomon in Shrine Bowl

I will go Sam Montgomery from Greenwood, who went to LSU, yes we were stacked at Defensive line form 2010 to 2012, but what if we had had another guy like Montgomery, in the mix with Clowney, Quarles and Taylor, that defense would have been even greater. (Montgomery had 9 sacks in 2011 and 8 sacks in 2012 for LSU)

He had 2 sacks and was very disruptive in LSU's win over us in 2012 when we were undefeated and # 3 in the country, so if he played for us, we win that game and have 1 loss in the SEC but maybe we don't fumble a zillion times against Florida if we were still undefeated.

With a 1 loss team we should get in over Georgia who we demolished, to the SEC Championship and maybe we beat Alabama and get the national championship and get to destroy Notre Dame :) ?

Don’t know if we beat them. Ran across one of the player’s mom, a starter on D, on our way into the stadium. She told us that she wasn’t sure how this would go. She went to say that it had gotten out a few had the flu, but she said it was pretty much the defensive side of the ball and a couple of playmakers on the offensive side.

Very nice lady by the way.

I. M. Hipp. From Irma but took a bus to Nebraska to walk and ended up starting tailback. I saw him play in Lincoln and wondered just how he got away.

Kevin Garnett. He would have been a part of Fogler's best teams, and the Gamecocks would have survived the first round of the tournament.

Oops! Didn't see "football" in the original post.
I was thinking the same thing, so I made the same mistake. If I remember correctly, wouldn't it have been theoretically possible for us to have had Garnett and Jermaine O'Neal at Carolina at the same time had they not both elected to do go the NBA?

Solomon did sign with us, of course, & was a “casualty” of the ACC’s “800” SAT rule. Not sure what happened with Stanley Morgan. Shortly after the Shrine Bowl, he signed an instrument being used then that was symbolic & not at all binding…a “Southern Letter of Intent” (with South Carolina). It was the product of a gentlemen’s agreement that coaches in the SEC & ACC generally followed…if a kid committed & signed this “symbolic instrument”, other coaches in the region would back off recruiting them. For the most part, the signing of the (binding) National Letter of Intent in February was simply a formality. Again…not sure what happened to flip Morgan to Tennessee. My recollection is that it wasn’t a national signing day shocker. Morgan had already changed his mind. That was the last I ever heard of the “Southern Letter of Intent”. Not sure if the Morgan instance put it away or if it was already on it’s way out, anyhow.

We never had a chance to sign AJ Green. He had made up his mind to go to UGA by the time he was in 8th grade.

I’m bad, sometimes they walked down the hallway out the end wings……I was wasted I tell ya, wasted! Not a bit of strength left in Sampson.

That would be my choice. What grates is both signed with us in the early December signing period. Heard Dietzel announce on tv that both were ours in their respective years. Solomon did not qualify and ucheat came in late and took Morgan away. That stung especially when Morgan turned out to be such a great one.

If you ever come to Tampa and have a little time they have a section devoted to Freddie at the Tampa Museum of History. I was surprised when I visited, but he is well remembered for his time there.

Stephen Davis He was a rare combination of speed and power. Had 3 1000 yard seasons in the NFL. Why the heck did he go to Auburn? Big dissapointment

This is truly the answer if "football" wasn't in the thread title.

Amazing that it took 26 posts to produce the unbeatable answer. Steve Davis from Spartanburg IS the answer.

Green was my initial thought as well. Perhaps he's a difference maker in that 2010 season with Jeffery and turns a couple of those losses into wins.

Mason Rudolph also is a good answer.

Throw Cordarrelle Patterson on the list too. Adding him to that 2012 team would have been quite explosive.

Say hi to Richard Bell for me

The lowest closing price for Apple (AAPL) all-time was $0.04, on July 8, 1982.
And, to be honest, if I had a time machine, there are plenty of even better options than AAPL to go back and buy, but I don't want to seem greedy.

1996-97 Garnett's a sophomore, O'neal's a freshman with the 3 guards Davis, McKie, Watson as our starting 5 and a deep bench behind them. Kentucky got swept by us that year, speed being their issue and it cost them in the title game vs Arizona as well with all 5 of Arizona's starters being consistently too quick and athletic for UK. So instead of UK let's say with the 5 I just mentioned, we don't gag vs UGA in the SEC Tournament, beat UK a 3rd time win the SEC Tournament and get the #1 seed that went to them. Utah would try to slow us down but despite KVH best efforts we get to the final four face Minnesota one of their starting guards was injured and Bobby Jackson had to try and carry them, they're a sitting duck for this lineup. Then finally USC vs Arizona for the title, unlike UK we would not have an issue dealing with their quickness and athleticism. Mckie and Watson vs Simon and Bibby: isolated camera for those matchups! Michael Dickerson vs Larry Davis could be a problem for us or a problem for them. Ultimately it would've been decided inside: too much Garnett and O'Neal(not sure which one would've been M.O.P). So yeah 1997 national champs with that lineup!

Respectfully disagree but you did indicate you never saw Solomon play. Had you seen him play, you'd understand Solomon is the answer for us old guys.
