They had no business getting two teams into the playoff. Fine, Clemson won the ACC championship, so they get in by virtue of the rules. But having SMU earn an at-large was ridiculous. And seeding them _ahead_ of Clemson is just proof of the fraud.
That was an escape plan by the CFP - once Clemtech lucked by SMU, there was no way they were leaving Miami and SMU out and putting a 4th SEC team in, so they had the SMU excuse built-in with the "losing your conference championship won't hurt you" remark.
