They don’t have to - we have Franklin featured and not wanting to talk about Paterno. Fun.
Wasn't that question thrown at him last season during a game week press conference? It's stupid to expect him to address such a question in that context, but I expect nothing less from ESPN and I'd imagine this will come off as Franklin trying to bury the past in the show. I don't blame Franklin for being dismissive. He has carefully spoken about Paterno briefly at other times and isn't trying to hide anything, but game week should be about the past and upcoming opponents.

Its easier to just say something short but respectful. It’s a sensitive subject but saying nothing isn’t a good look game week or no. Result is you end up in a documentary looking bitter.

Not sure how anyone could say there isn’t a bias at ESPN regarding PSU. Pretty obvious. Guess we can look forward to 15th, 20th and 25th anniversary specials as well.

Very soon I'm sure we'll see the specials about Michigan/Anderson/Schembechler, Michigan State/Nassar, and Ohio State/Strauss/Hayes. ESPN will be all over ignored direct first hand accounts from student athletes when said first hand accounts were swept under the rug.

What a bunch of moronic blowhards on a network more into pushing agendas and trying to be news instead of report it.

On the other hand, I like his style
ESPN is pathetically biased against PSU. Kind of like the Big10! Not going to get better until PSU fights back.

Step #1: a full blown honoring of Joe at a football game and invite ESPN to cover it!

Step #2. Ultimatum to leave Big10 unless equitable treatment given to O$U, Meatchicken, and MSU. No action? ACC here we come.

This will never end.....why, because the Board of Trustees convicted Joe and the administration has effectively scrubbed his NIL from the history of the program.
We can all opine about Michigan, but they haven't moved on Bo, his statue stands and we likely won't be getting any ESPN specials about his legacy.
No one to blame but Surma and his posse.

^^^ This. The BOT sold their soul to the demons and the rest of PSU nation will be paying the price of it for generations.

I disagree. It wasn't the time or place for that question. Whatever Franklin said was going to be a 10 second sound bite that ESPN can parse however they wanted too. (See the entire
"with the benefit of hindsight" that they continually and purposely misquote. Besides Franklin is the coach after the coach who replaced Paterno.
Also didn't someone off stage say that they would be happy to schedule an interview at a later date?
IMO Franklin was in a damned if you do and damned if you don't position.

f ESPN and the horse they rode in on
Howdy NIT1300….Going to be sunny and 92 in DFW today. I have a 10 am Tee time and I honestly do not give a crap about ESPN and their opinions. I have prayed many times for anyone that may have been a victim of this incident. I choose to live in the here and now while not forgetting the past. I also choose to support PSU for all the good it has done for thousands and thousands of people and especially the help provided for those less fortunate.

"The great Joe Paterno...." (CJF's initial news conference) and his defense of PSU "culture" in his postgame comments after the PinStripe Bowl in Yankee Stadium.
These comments meant a lot to me......I've told him so. He doesn't have an obligation to comment on this ever again IMO.

For what we pay him, he has an obligation to do what we say when we say it.

For someone as quick on his feet as Franklin, it's a poor move IMO. Again, easier to say something positive and leave it at that. I do agree he's in a no win position for the most part and you're right, ESPN can frame any comment or quote however they want to suit thier agenda.

And I was at the Pinstripe Bowl when Franklin said what he said about culture, and that was in reference to what OB said when he left IMO. Nothing to do with Paterno. But, moving on....

Agree, and he restored the uniforms. I've always thought that was a more than subtle message to the BOT and some others.

It would surprise me if he was referencing BOB....they are pretty good friends.

Surely, the 8 OT effort against one of the worst teams in college football has more than impressed you....

Nine OTs. That doesn’t just happen without careful planning.

And I went to that “one of the worst teams in college football” for graduate school. As if I didn’t hate me enough.

Can't wait for ten more years of the same......so many opportunities to mop of tears......

I mean, Franklin hasn't cried much that I know of after losses, but you guys seem close, so..... ;).

Maybe USC will come calling after Riley blows it. 🤞

He doesn't have time to cry.....he's got millions to count. I have not cried in reference to PSU football in 60 years......except when Joe died.

Not a coach, but obvious you don’t give a guy with a marginal record a top ten salary (for ten years). I think once people realize coaching college football isn’t brain surgery, we’ll all be better off.

Exactly. Asking him about Paterno during the season? WTF do you expect him to say? He handled it perfectly. Regardless of what the haters on this board think.

Pardon me for not expecting Franklin to answer a random question about football coach who has been dead for a decade from an ESPN reporter who was already told Franklin wasn't available.

Was ESPN told that? I'd have expected them to contact the athletic dept to arrange an interview if they wanted Franklin to participate in their hit piece TV special. If they did and he declined, then that should have been the end of the discussion. But it wouldn't surprise me if ESPN intentionally tried to circumvent that by asking questions at a game week press conference. Franklin gave them the exact answer they deserved.
