if the ACC wanted to conspire to steal a bid, this is exactly how they would do it. That said, I have zero sympathy for anyone who got left out. You all had your chances. You want in, don't lose to freaking Vandy and Oklahoma. Or Syracuse. Or Kentucky.

Yeah, no sympathy from me towards Bama either. They’ve got way too many holes to win it all this year.

In what way? It’s just math.
Variables that go into it. Different variables can change the sos depending on the weights of different variables can change the outcome of a strength of schedule. Can't use rankings at all because rankings are bias and subjective depending on the poll. Can really only use wins losses and wins losses of opponents and combines or same opponents. Margin of victory.

There are no variables. Its just the combined winning percentage of all your opponents against everyone on their schedule except you….adjusted for home field team in all games where applicable. The percentages are then ranked from highest to lowest for each team, and that determines your SOS rank.

It's not about the best 12 teams just like March Madness isn't about the best 64 teams.

I’m not 100% sure what Trojan is trying to say, but I’d say it like this… EKU finished their reg season 8-4. Is that considered a Good win for SOS? I don’t know, but for us we are just glad it was a win…

EKU is FCS. They are not included in the calculation. For purposes of computing MSU’s SOS, it’s like we never played them.

ETA: It’s possible that they might be included in the calculation, but only for games they played against FBS teams. For example, if EKU played 3 total FBS opponents including MSU, and lost all 3 games, their portion of the calculation would be 0-2 (because result against MSU would not be factored in). That would still be a very small drop in the bucket in the formula, but technically not zero impact.

Likewise, results of opponents against other FCS teams is not included in their calculation. So Ole Miss goes 9-3, but with one win over FCS team and the other against MSU, their percentage of SOS calculation would be 7-3 (.700 winning percentage).
