Impressed with Beamer's portal efforts

Based on bringing in 20 portal players, mostly seniors (11/20) it appears there is a sense of urgency to win now and a transfer recruiting effort to match. I agree with that sentiment. It means a high level of turnover again next year but we clearly didn't have the depth needed to get the desired results last year so I think the coaches did the right thing.

He also got some players with a lot of eligibility left. Beamer gets it. He’s making sure the lack of talent up front won’t be a problem in the future.

We'll see how it pans out. Sanders was a home run grab, so long as his knee is 100% All others are TBD.

In terms of quantity...yes. In terms of quality....remains to be seen. In terms of average stars, we rank only 23rd.

Yeah, with the portal, I think it's a numbers game. You bring in 20 or more players and hope that maybe 4 or 5 can be contributors.
Yeah. I'm not sold on all of the FCS/DII/lower-level DI players we've added. Finding a diamond-in-the-rough is great now and then. But I don't think you can be successful by filling your basket with them, hoping to bat 1.000. We shall see.

I think this is how college football will look going forward. Most schools will field a different team each year. The number of players that come in as freshmen and stay two or three more years is rapidly declining.

I look at it by position groups.Lets face it we had some major deficiencies in several groups.Mainly,RB ,WR,Te,OL,DL,LB.Did I forget 1?.I think each of these groups was improved by the portal additions.OL and LB mainly by depth, the others by probable starters.
Schools in the mid tier of the SEC all face this.Either embrace the new rules or you’ll be left behind.I think the reason Dabo didn’t get a sniff from Bama was his reluctance to adapt.Listening to Saban’s interview on ESPN he made the point that you have to be adaptable in todays environment.

Roster building to add necessary depth for a demanding schedule takes time, especially for a low to mid-level SEC program. I'm hopeful we have added personnel that can fill some of the many needs for our program. Time will tell.

That's my concern as well. If any were on a FCS or lower level FBS team, they were there for a reason. And that reason probably has to do with talent. As I've said before: we never have been and never will be a recruiting powerhouse. We have to make up the difference in the strength and conditioning room, the practice field, the weekly strategy and tactical meetings, and on the sideline and box on Game Day.
