I can't even imagine...... The pain, the sacrifice, the horror, the bravery, the valor..... I think of those men storming the beaches - The ones who jumped out of those landing craft only to drown because the water was too deep and they were weighed down by their equipment. Those who escaped that fate were likely to be gunned down on the beach by guns that hadn't been destroyed ahead of the invasion. Its heart-wrenching, yet something we can be thankful for and proud of [their actions].An absolutely astounding achievement and sacrifice. Kids marched unflinchingly into the teeth of almost certain death.
Doubt it could be done today.
Many are most familiar with Omaha beach, which had the highest amount of KIA/WIA/MIA. Over 24k.
It was an unfortunate luck of the draw. For those who landed on Utah beach, out of over 23k troops there were only 197 wounded/killed.
Juno Beach and Gold Beach had over 1,000 casualties by Canadian and British troops.
Not enough recognition goes to the paratroopers who landed first, odds of survival were estimated at 1 of 4.
I fear we may soon find out.An absolutely astounding achievement and sacrifice. Kids marched unflinchingly into the teeth of almost certain death.
Doubt it could be done today.
Band of Brothers just might be the greatest series or film ever made. I've watched it a number of times now and it seems to get better over time. No single episode can match the intensity of Saving Private Ryan, but the format of the 10-part series allows Band of Brothers to "slow cook" in a way that delivers a fantastic and emotional story.I watched Band of Brothers again on Memorial Day weekend. Just helps remind me of what you posted.
God bless them all.
