In it's current state at 12 teams - is it easier at a G5 school to win the conference and hope to make the playoff...

or to coach at a Mississippi State, Vandy, Kentucky, Auburn, Ole Miss** and hope you are one of the top 4 teams in the conference.

I'm trying to understand why Mullen didn't at least go to a P4 school.

Big 12 is the easiest route but to answer your question coach at Miss State.

My questions are:
Is the Country Club getting back together? Is Hev going to give up his Lowe's executive position to come coach his OL?

Who will be his DC? Collins is available.

Will he call the University of Nevada-Reno "The School Up North?"

He didn’t get a P4 offer. Occams Razor.

And one thing Mullen did 100% wrong…..trying to one up the Raiders and be the biggest show in town or whatever. He needs to partner with them/the city…..not create a competition.

So my thoughts are that his head isn’t in the right place.

All that matters is unlv will have more nil money than anyone in their conference. If he cant win big in that situation then hes done anyway

He will have to run the table to sniff the playoffs because the MWC loses every semi-respectful team next year.

The CFB playoff is going to be like the NCAA Tournament, it's not enough to make it, you'll have to make some noise for it to be considered a "great" season.

I don't know if that is the reason Mullen took that job..... but that's a good question.

I think it could be easier at Boise State or Memphis to win the conference rather than be 10-2 at MSU, UK and Vandy.

Auburn and OM will have a chance most years because they have always been able to buy talent. If I was coach I'd coach those places over a G5.

edit to remove UNLV. Their football history is pathetic and that will not be an easier job than any lower P4.

Disagree. Making the playoffs will mark a great year. Especially at 12, and even at 16. Just the reality moving forward. The percentage of teams that make it, vs other NCAA events, is much lower.

Don’t fall into that cynical trap of thinking it’s all about money. It is with some, but it’s still football and opportunity for most.

If you provide a good coach with equal or greater talent to all of his opponents he should win the majority of the time. Thats what that money should translate to assuming Dan is a
Good coach right now.

I agree, I just don’t think that money (NIL specifically) translates in a linear way to winning big.

Many other factors come into play - coaching, system, fan support, culture. Of course if you have those things, you likely have more NIL….but not always.

Maybe not in the sec when they all have money. The mountain west might be a little easier to separate yourself.

i consider the measure of a coach is what you get out of your talent. Ie) leach was very good. Jimbo fisher was very bad.

in basketball this could be seen with Bobby Knight taking small town three stars and putting a beating on a team full of nba first round picks.

He's 52 years old. Maybe he is just smart enough to have fun...let his son play golf at some great courses...let his wife play golf at some great courses...and in his off time just take a few dimes and take a chance on the slots. He won't have to recruit because of the NIL money there. Overall a pretty shrewd move. BTW, he ain't coming back to Starkville.

Yep. He can roll out p4 talent and not have to bother with recruiting too much in the mountain west.

UNLV is perfect spot for him. Loaded roster and program that Odom built up. Great golf. Big city. Southern California talent pipeline. Nil. G5 school so expectations aren't as high as sec but they can still pay good money for coach. Good opportunity to test the waters in the era of nil portal and see if he can make it without as much pressure and the competition won't be as good either. Easier route to playoff
