Interesting blog from Houston newspaper about baseball expanding the playoffs.

Calls for adding 2 playoff teams in each league instead of 1 and playing abest 2-of-3series for the first round with the top 2 teams in each league getting a bye instead of a 1-game play-in between the 2 wild cards. I'm against expanding the playoffs, but I actually like this idea OK.

10 off days for a max of 19 games! if you want an off day, win your series early. otherwise, let's make pitching depth count the same in the postseason as it does in the regular season.

plus, this would shorten the season, which is a plus.

and I would be okay with it, still not a big fan of prolonging ANYTHING in baseball. But, if the World Series is in October then I wouldn't be too too disappointed.

The only thing is in baseball, rest is not necessarily an advantage. I know that sounds weird, but sometimes it's easier to play a seven game series and then play again rather than sweep and have a week off because players get out of rhythm.

I've already let my opinion be known about starting the season about a month earlier and ending a month earlier and shortening spring training, which I think is a racket.

Ridiculous to have one ace start 3 games in a series. True, to do that he usually has to go a bit short on rest, but it's still ridiculous. and fourth starters, let alone 5th ones, are pointless now in the postseason.

but yeah, i agree that long off stretches can be more detrimental than helpful otherwise. another reason to get rid of those off days, IMO.

You could end the season on a Sunday and the top 2 seeds in each league could be playing by Saturday. And they'd have the advantage of throwing their #1 against the #3 or #4 in the first game. Agree with you that spring training is a racket. It's all about the tourism dollars and very little about getting players ready for the season.</p>
