Is Andy Reid in the top 10 of NFL head coaches all-time?

I would say yes, he’s a top 15 head coach. One more ring and he will be a top 10 coach. Definitely a HOFer.

Year’s ago I remember an interview with coaches from the 70’s & 80’s and the subject of salary cap came up. If memory serves me right they said that today’s salary cap gives a good coach a much better chance to succeed.

And the increased number of teams in the playoffs helps coaches as well.

No. Somewhere in the top 20.

The top ten (no order)

Lombardi
Belichick
Halas
Noll
Shula
Lambeau
Walsh
Brown
Landry
Gibbs
pretty good list, but you could easily swap out Landry and put in Reid, the other 9 though imo are ahead of Reid.

It levels the playing field. You don’t have the big market-small market horsea$$ like in baseball.
baseball doesn't have a hard cap like the NFL. Take the Packers and Aaron, if it weren't for the cap they would have a much better team, so I don't see how having a cap helps them succeed. it might level out the playing field, but doesn't help teams succeed .

With a cap, a team like the 70’s Steelers would never have won four SB’s….I think that’s what he’s saying about it being easier to win with a cap.

Exactly. A football team can’t “buy a championship” because of a the salary cap. With the level playing field in terms of spending money, it comes down to skill in managing the cap, evaluating talent, developing talent, X’s and O’s, etc.

I don’t disagree but the premise is, it helps a coach succeed. If by leveling the playing field that helps a team succeed, I guess. I think it’s a funny way to phrase it

Paul Brown will always be #1 in my book. Then Lombardi. Then a mixture of Noll, Shula, Walsh, Gibbs, Landry.

Careful all those who say baseball chamionships can be bought versus NFL franchises. In reality not many NFL teams win a Super Bowl.

And baseball has had a lot more franchises win the World Series the last 20 years than people give it credit for

IMO, Andy will wind up in the top 20 in the end. He’s wasted a lot of good teams and opportunities. When you look at his overall record on conference championships and super bowls, he doesn’t stand up to the top 10 or so coaches.

It all depends on what your decision weighs most. Shula was the all time wins leader, but didn’t win a ton of titles. As such, he’s often overlooked. I think Reid (as of now) is in a similar boat. Win another title or two and that changes.
Wins are as good of an indicator as any, I think. But with the QB he's got, I expect he's not done winning Supes, either.

It depends on how much longer he plans to coach. He’s 64 and not a pillar of good health.
