Is it clear that automatic bids for conference champions does not

I think we've seen one conference champ play so far and they played the closest game against the highest seeded opponent. I think after the next round we can better say if conference champs should be an automatic bid or not. I think we can say that the teams were seeded about right and that big game experience matters.

This would be a good time to reevaluate the necessity of a conference championship game.
With the CFP format, it appears this game has lost it usefulness. (Yeah, I know, it's about $$$)
Yeah. Before the new expanded playoff was set up I had tried to imagine a scenario where conference championships would count as the first round of the playoffs. This would require having the the right number of conferences with each conference having similar numbers of teams. Since the conference realignments never had that goal in mind, conference championships shouldn't factor into playoff selections. This means IMHO they do more harm than good.

Looking at it that way, you're right.

necessarily put the best teams in the CFP?
No one should have ever thought that it did. Twelve teams worthy to compete for the national championship can easily be identified with the digital power available today, but that would require the will to get it right, ruling out entitlement based on inclusion. Have we passed the point where that can be done? Decide on requisites that are quality indicators and load the championship criteria. Then let the computer do it.

College is headed towards the NFL model so look at how they make it work. The division (or conference) champs get in. Even if the division (or conference sucks). However that division (conference) only gets 1 spot. Then you seed the remaining teams. The NFL recognizes that the 3 or 4th best team in any division (conference) is not a contender to win it all. That's the hang-up with the College game. They think the 4th or 5th best team in any conference gets a shot at winning the natty. See Indiana, See Tennessee. The problem with College folks is that each seed gets 4 million dollars. I'd be ok with no conference championship getting in if it also said no more than 4 from any conference. The math wouldn't allow that. So conference champs at the minimum get in. Just no auto byes. If they are the 16th seed based on what they have done then so be it. Either way it could be made better, but ESPN will not allow the made for TV BS to end.

I am not against auto bids for conference champions. I just feel they should have a minimum ranking requirement. I am however dead set against having the top 4 conference champions get 1st round byes.
