Is the luge really worthy of Olympic competition?

I mean.. how many people grow up competing in the U9 Luge league? Or do people say.. hey let’s join the high school luge team? Is there a senior luge circuit of which I’m unaware? It seems like a competition completely contrived for the Olympics.

You can say that about many Olympic sports but a lot of the winter sports are popular in Europe including Luge.

At least a crap load of people compete in amateur curling leagues. It’s a serious thing in colder climates.

Do you even watch Olympics? There are plenty of sports most have never heard of and are a push for sport

Signed up for curling this year. League was so full I was only going to be a sub (yes, I get the pun) with no assigned team in case someone no showed. There were apparently 40 more people that tried to join the league than they could handle. The league has 16 teams and has to share the ice with kids hockey leagues of all ages and figure skating. They can't take anymore teams.

I felt like the dorky kid that never got picked at basketball... Real kick in the nads.

Ask for the luge/bobsled/skeleton, the only place I know it exists is Park City. Would have to be expensive as hell to build a course.

What I don't get is the 4 man bobsled. I understand 2 man; you have a driver and a brake man. But what do the 2 extra guys in the middle do? Yell "Wheeeee!" ?

Fencing
Team Handball
Futsal
Biathalon
Artistic Swimming
Biathalon
Curling
Skeleton
Bobsleigh
Ski jumping

And probably about 20 more that you would never see a U9 league in the US.

We used to try to make a course when sledding. It was the u8 version of NBA for sure.

Luge and bobsled are interesting at least. Its fast moving and there is real danger if anyone hits a wall at the wrong angle.
Skeleton is basically luge for people who are even crazier. Lets hurl ourselves down some ice, only do it face first this time!

The Biathlon is dumb as 17. I get that its really popular in northern Europe, but its 17ing dumb. Cross country skiing is not fun to watch. Shooting is not fun to watch. Lets combine them!
...but the Biathlon clearly takes a lot of athletic skill, so I guess its worthy of inclusion.

If you think the olympics is bad. Wait till next summer in Birmingham, Al. They are hosting the World Games here you can see events like Korfball, fistball, dance sport, casting, and finswimming.

I think one of these is a category on YouPorn.

For the first time in my life I haven't watched any of it, and most likely won't. The last time China hosted I was very uncomfortable watching the fluff pieces and the out and out promoting of all things China. This one seemed to have the feel of what 1936 in Berlin must have been like, to me. I just don't care to watch it.

Fencing - widely practiced sport, especially at the collegiate level
Team Handball - popular amateur leagues everywhere
Futsal - there are futsal leagues in every city.
Biathalon - at least you've got to have a 17ton of physical endurance
Artistic Swimming - teams of chicks in skimpy swimsuits. I'll allow it
Biathalon - ditto to before
Curling - hugely popular
Skeleton - it's just the luge headfirst.. ain't no amateur skeleton leagues to compete in
Bobsleigh - a 30 year old movie is the only thing it's ever given us
Ski jumping - Ever been to Colorado, Utah? There are fools everywhere doing that stuff.
