Is this a first? A mayor that doesn't want a pro team in their town?

Mayor of Las Vegas telling the A's to stay in Oakland.

Couple of things I didn't realize here:
I don't think I realized that they wanted to put the A's baseball stadium right on the Vegas strip. That does sounds like a nightmare logistically.
I didn't know the Vegas strip is outside the jurisdiction of the city of Las Vegas and falls under Clark County. I don't know why I find that so interesting, but I do.
I didn't realize there was a 3 year gap between the Oakland lease and the opening of the new LV ballpark. Maybe Pearl will have a new tenant for a few years after all***

I haven’t seen where they’re proposing it (south end of the strip, probably?) but having it on the strip sounds awful. It’d be good to have it a little off with easy access, like the Raiders. North Vegas would’ve been cool too if it was walkable to downtown, especially with Circa open now. I understand why some would want it closer to the strip, though

Most of the strip is technically within in Paradise, NV.

It's where the Tropicana is currently located. It's going to close in April and be demolished over the next year.

That’s a little south but does seem like that’d cause serious congestion unless they figured out something with new roads and back entrances

That probably is a first. I think she wants it, but knows it's expensive and will take some political bullets for donating to the A's cause. They are planning to go where the old Tropicana is located, which is the slap-*** middle of the strip. Like right on it. So I get the congestion part of it. But people are smart out there about figuring out logistics.

Must be really really nice to have a town so wealthy and with so much going on that you can literally turn down a MLB team. Insane.

NFL, NHL, the Sphere, and F1 racing all have been added recently to what was already a crazy busy town.

There's something oddly satisfying to me about a political subdivision telling a sport franchise and its shills to go f*ck themselves and the horse they rode in on. There has to be a balance restored.
This ^^^

Having a pro franchise is not always a net positive for a city. Especially on the back end when you have teams holding the cities for hostage saying "give us $1 billion for a new stadium or we are leaving".

Agreed but it also depends on the city. Somewhere like Vegas it’s not such a big deal but pull the Grizzlies from Memphis or the Kings from Sacramento that would be a bigger blow.

The devil is in the details.

She doesn't want it on the strip because she doesn't have any jurisdiction over the strip. She wanted it in a different location in northern vegas that she would've had jurisdiction over but that got shut down.

It's a dry heat. **

But on a serious note, I'd rather play a day game in LV than Houston.
Of course Houston is indoors (retractable roof) where Vegas is going to be open air, but I agree with your point.

Its been pushed as the most walkable stadium in the world. Thats how the logistics would be figured out- parking all over the spread out city and using multiple modes, including walking, for the last mile.

- use nearby parking garages owned by MGM and others.
- uber to the game.
- uber to a spot near the game and walk the rest of the way.
- Musk's Boring Company would have a Tropicana stop within their Vegas Loop.
- Public Bus transit.
- A massive amount of road rerouting and redesign around the stadium since it is bordered by roads with 9-11 lanes.

So basically, their logistical solution is 'here are a bunch of ways...you figure it out which is the least worst for your situation'.
Itll be interesting to see how the very limited parking that is shown in the rendering below will be allocated.

Yikes. I figured they would have a retractable roof or something.
you can see in the pic I posted above and this one below, that there is some sort of tall glass structure that covers most fans. I would hope the covering is oriented to cover the most number of people between 12noon and 8pm.
MGM is dead straight north of the Tropicana property, so based on the pic below, the covering would work well for sun coverage since it will be in the Southern part of the sky and west(3rd base line) in the afternoon and evening.

I was there 2 weeks ago and I cannot imagine more people on the strip than there were. You couldn’t pay me enough to be there right now for the SB.

LV sets up good for something event driven like the NFL but I just don’t know about MLB where you might have 5 games in a week and there isn’t a single casino or hotel that wants it to be really convenient for you to leave and go to another venue.

Also.. All those mid 90’s casinos like the Venetian and Paris feel outdated now that stuff like City Center has come to town. The days of the cheesy themed hotels are over.

Apparently the owner was was supposed to pay like half of the expenses and thought that he could get out of it. He thought once the announcement was made Vegas would be too embarrassed to let it fall through. He tried to bluff Vegas. Bold move.

Woof. Walking in Vegas sucks. I'm sure several of you have done this routine like I have: "Hey, there's Caesar's right next door, I'll just walk over there." 30 minutes later, you're still only halfway and want to jump into the Bellagio fountain to off yourself.

It's kinda pathetic if the A's beg to be allowed to move there.

There have to be plenty of other cities who would roll out the red carpet for them. They should go where they're wanted.

Surprised Vegas hasn't gone after the Memphis Grizzlies. The majority owner of the Grizzles is the richest owner in the NBA. And one of the youngest. He built a tech company in California and is originally from there. I hope the Grizzlies stay in Memphis, but I could see that move happening.

A few years ago I went to a convention at the Wynn and they were sold out of rooms. My company booked me at Treasure Island and it was just "right across the street."

Um, it was a 30 minute walk every morning. Absolutely brutal.

Do the Grizz have good attendance? Seems like they do. Everybody I know that goes to a game say it is awesome. Not sure why they’d want to move.

As someone that spent 3 months in Vegas last year and will do the same every year for the foreseeable future until I either lose F1 or inherit the Super Bowl, I think it’s awesome. I went in Tropicana only once while there. Has a flyover directly from MGM Grand. Never doubt that place’s ability to pull off what seems ridiculous. 30-40k people in a baseball stadium right there isn’t going to move the needle very much in that town, having spent a couple Sundays walking while the Raiders were in town.

It’s down this year some because pretty much everyone is hurt and they’re near the bottom of the standings but overall attendance is decent. I don’t know if it’s finalized yet but the city announced that they would be doing a huge renovation of FedEx Forum to bring it up to snuff with today’s arenas and that the Grizzlies would agree to another long term lease for 20+ years. The current lease runs out after the 28/29 season.
