Is this Franklin's best coaching staff?

There's been a lot of discussion about player turnover, returning players and portal acquisitions, but not as much regarding the staff.

If I'm not mistaken the 2023 season will be the first season since 2019 where Franklin isn't breaking in a new offensive or defensive coordinator.
Yurcich seems to have had the offense firing on all cylinders last season (and may be displaying the most offensive acumen since Moorhead?)
And while Brent Pry fielded some strong defenses, what Diaz did in his first season on defense seems very promising.

I'd say if the defense progresses as much in year two under Diaz as the offense did in it's second year under Yurcich, things bode well for Penn State with perhaps the most "complementary" teams (and staffs) that Franklin has had at Penn State. Also there are significant additions to the staff with analysts that were previously not there if I'm not mistaken. Or perhaps my fan bias is affecting my outlook?

Hope Franklin can "keep the band together" as personally it's seemed that coaching turnover has been a challenge. I realize it's part of the landscape of modern college football, but the coordinator turnover rate (for whatever reason) has seemed high and its hard to say it doesn't impact performance.

Thoughts?

Good question.... hadn't really thought about it. At first glance I say yes it is but have to go look back when Morehead and Pry were here.

Not saying anything negative about Collins as the ST coordinator. But I would love to see some more impacts on ST. Bigger returns. Blocked kicks. Those hidden yard type of plays that we seem to miss out on sometimes. Hopefully with all the big time young guys we see big improvement on ST this year.

Even if it is, it still isn’t good enough for us (and people who look like us).

PSU has a pretty strong assistant's room but Collins needs to up his game. If PSU has a really big year (11-1 or better), I think Yurcich and Diaz will get offers in '24.

The 2016 staff was WORLDS ahead of anything since, wrt getting the most from the roster.

That was, overall, a "middle of the Big Ten" roster (yes, there were a couple real top end kids - aka Barkley), but that roster had huge holes in it, relative to what one would expect of a Big Ten champion.
The QB was a kid no major program wanted (as a QB)
The Offensive Line roster was still in shambles - with no veteran presence (I think they started 4 Freshmen or redshirt Freshmen in the Rose Bowl)
The linebackers were a bunch of kids who PSU likely wouldn't even recuit today
Many of the DBs and much of the DL were odds and ends kids who no big time program would have envied as recruits.
And yet, they developed, they got better, and they were very well managed (coaches finding the right roles for the right guys, and deploying them in systems that accentuated the positives). By the end of the year, about as good a team as anyone in the country.

Didn’t we all hate Pry’s soft zone?

Didn‘t we all hate Moorhead’s RPO (30-second delayed handoff)?
Familiarity breeds contempt....at least with the BWICAC....rest assured playing actual contests will bring out the fanboy rage.
We deserve better!

JMO but yes. If Hagans steps up (and I think he will) it well definitely be Franklin's best staff.
