Mississippi State's leading receiver from a year ago, Jamayel Smith, won't start in Saturday's season opener at Louisiana Tech and missed Tuesday's practice battling tendinitis in his left knee.

Smith caught 33 passes for 510 yards and three touchdowns last season.

Though he didn't return any kicks or punts, Smith is the first option at returner with Derek Pegues suspended for the first game.

but entering the first game week of the season, we are really lucky comparetively. Who are our major injuries? We lost Johnny Carpenter to a chronic shoulder injury sustained in the spring. Other than that, the worst thing that's happened is that we have to redshirt a really good freshman OL. Sure, he would have played, but I'll take that any day. Oneal Wilder will miss 4-6 weeks, but wouldn't have seen the field anyway- he needs a year to learn how to be a WR, and if we're smart we'll RS him too. Other than that, there are only minor injuries, tendonitis, colds, etc. Now look at FL- during August practice, they tore 5 ACLs. FIVE. and 3 were projected starters. GA's had some problems, Auburn's had some I know, OM lost 1 of their really good lineman for half the season. I don't really keep up with everybody else but I'd say we came out of preseason practice in pretty good shape.
