Found this tidbit:

<font size="2">A few eyebrows were raised by players like</font> <font size="2">Jamont Gordon</font> <font size="2">and</font> <font size="2">Kyle Weaver</font> <font size="2">shockingly deciding to pass up their invites to the pre-draft camp, but very few people wanted to dwell on it besides saying that they are clearly digging their own grave, Weaver especially, who can't go back to school like Gordon can once he realizes that there is a strong possibility he will go undrafted.</font>

Sounds like Gordon is getting some EXCELLENT advice.

<font face="tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="2">The NBA has put out its list of 64 players who will compete in the NBA Pre-Draft Camp in Orlando starting Wednesday, and there is Mississippi State representation on the list, just like loyal Blog readers were expecting.</font></p>

<font face="tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="2"> </font></p>

<font face="tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="2">But it's not who you were expecting.</font></p>

<font face="tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="2"> </font></p>

<font face="tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="2">It's Charles Rhodes.</font></p>

<font face="tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="2"> </font></p>

<font face="tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="2">Not Jamont Gordon.</font></p>

<font face="tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="2"> </font></p>

<font face="tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="2">Puzzled? So am I. First, a refresher: Gordon, when I called him last week, said his invitation to the pre-draft camp was in hand and that he was leaving Houston, where he has been training, today. Rhodes has not returned my calls.</font></p>

<font face="tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="2"> </font></p>

<font face="tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="2">Gordon's invitation was viewed as a no-brainer. I was less convinced about Rhodes, though I ultimately did expect him to say he got an invitation.</font></p>

<font face="tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="2"> </font></p>

<font face="tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="2">Fast-forward to today, and imagine my surprise when I go to the blog of CBSSports.com's Gary Parrish earlier this afternoon - thanks to a kind reader's tip - and discover Rhodes, not Gordon, on the list.</font></p>

<font face="tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="2"> </font></p>

<font face="tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="2">So I call Gordon, no answer. </font></p>

<font face="tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="2"> </font></p>

<font face="tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="2">So I call Jerry Meyer, a Nashville-based recruiting analyst for Rivals.com who serves as Gordon's trainer. His explanation: "He's been down in Houston working out with coach John Lucas, been doing extremely well, playing well against some guys projected ahead of him," Meyer said. "The feeling was, really, going to Orlando could only hurt him and we feel confident he's a first-round pick."</font></p>

<font face="tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="2"> </font></p>

<font face="tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="2">Meyer said about 10 teams have contacted the Gordon camp about setting up individual workouts, and the preparations for those will occupy most of his time in the coming days and weeks. </font></p>

<font face="tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="2"> </font></p>

<font face="tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="2">But I couldn't let him go without asking the hard-and-fast question: Is there any chance Gordon is back in a maroon uniform next year? </font></p>

<font face="tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="2"> </font></p>

<font face="tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="2">"He's almost 100 percent set on staying in the draft," Meyer said.</font></p>

<font face="tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="2"> </font></p>

<font face="tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="2">About an hour later, Gordon calls back. He's coy on his reasons, but when pressed, says essentially what Meyer said.
</font></p>

<font face="tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="2"> </font></p>

<font face="tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="2">"I've got a lot of workouts and lot of teams telling me I can probably slide into the first round and my stock has been rising," he said.</font></p>

<font face="tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="2"> </font></p>

<font face="tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="2">And the big question, the one that involves a maroon uniform? "I don't know about that one," he said. "</font></p>

</p>

<font face="tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="2">

This is where players fall for the trap - you've got maybe a few teams at the end of the 1st round that tell him this kind of stuff to try and get him to come to a workout (knowing he has to pay his own way). In reality most of these teams are probably looking at options for their late 2nd round pick.

So he skips the camp that actually could improve his stock. A player's stock generally doesn't improve when he doesn't attend these camps unless everyone they're being compared to bombs at such camps. Granted, you never know with NBA GM's...someone late in the 1st round might really like him.

But I think he made a poor choice here.

teams are now allowed to pay for the players to come and workout. that recently changed.

to a first round pick. I just think he has more to lose from going as opposed to not. For the most part a second rounder who is drafted to hopefully fit a system has a greater chance of signing a contract than a FA.

DaQuan Cook improved his stock from early to mid 2nd round last year to go around 20th in the first round by going to the Orlando camp. It isn't a common occurrence, but if you are a late 1st round to mid 2nd round prospect your chances of improving your stock are a lot better by going to the camp than by skipping.

Of course there could be a team in the late first round that has told them they plan to draft him. Who knows though
