Let's see who the OGs are on here. Answer this question (Bruce, damn you, you're not eligible):

On radio broadcasts back in the day, there was a tell-tale sign that Steve D'Ercole was at bat. What was that tell-tale sign?

In addition to the well deserved compliments about Jim and his broadcasting prowess, he was a really nice man when I got to know him in the early 1980s while working at Willie Daniel's Athletic Club. He was a "regular" and a prince of a guy back then; I'm sure he still is today. All the best to you Jim.

Just a good man in addition to being a good broadcaster.

That said, I’m very much looking forward to listening to a game on the radio and knowing what the 17 is going on!

Jim is more maroon and white than any of us will ever be. His retirement is the last link to my childhood memories of MSU sports and, he was one of the reasons I love Bulldog baseball so much.
Some of his best work was during the 2014 football season as play-by-play. He was proud. He had as much swagger in his voice as the Dogs on the field.
Damn I hate he's retiring, but he has sure earned it. Love you, Jim. You'll be in my heart forever!

Good job Jim.......listened to so many games I could not attend and you made it like I was still inside the ballpark. Have a great retirement and Good Luck! God Speed.

Please tell me English is your second language. That would explain how you couldn’t keep up listening to him. Even I with all my hearing difficulties could audibly “see” what was going on and I listened to just about every game that I couldn’t watch.

I had something good to add here but do we really want to pile on PK?

It’s not as if he insulted the most currently beloved play-by-play baseball announcer in the whole State of Mississippi…

Geez, PK obviously doesn’t know WT17 to know…

"During the 2024 season, Ellis was inducted into the Ron Polk Ring of Honor as a member of the sixth inductee class"

Fitting that he got inducted in the SIXT inductee class (instead of the sixth).........wonder if they planned that?

Interested in finding out who the successor will be. Neil, that would be a good logical step but not sure he could continue to run the campus radio station and be gone as much as baseball requires. Jay Powell, I hope not, I fell like I'm listening to Jeff Foxworthy when he talks plus he's coaching HS baseball too or at least was. Anthony Craven, hope not. Bart, logical choice if he wants to give up TV. Jay Perry, please Lord no. Polk, I kid but no I can't stand the heavy breathing he does. Jason Crowder, he's not bad doing basketball. Do you hire someone from outside to only do baseball? Not likely
I listened to Bart Gregory on the SEC+ broadcasts. Maybe they'll give him the gig.

Did he steal some TRH rolls from you one time? I get he was declining but it’s not like he was Beth Mowins for the last 100 years. He is a legendary SEC baseball announcer that reminds me of Spring in Starkville. It’s amazing we can get anyone to come here with the way we treat our legends.
We still have people shitting on Leach who was one of the best CFB coaches of all time. He literally changed the game.

I don't understand why people see this as something to celebrate. He is the only broadcaster for baseball I have ever known, and I am in my 40's. With fans like this, who needs a rival?
Hell. We had people wanting Jack to quit, cheered when Hank Flick was unceremoniously removed from the PA, and now are drumming while Jim is leaving.

It absolutely sucks to share the fanbase with these people. “Starkville suuuucks!! The university suuuuuucks!! Our announcers suuuuuuck!!! The golden triangle suuuuuuks!!!! Why can’t we sign anyone??? That suuuuucks!!!”

No more hearing it is the bottom of the 6th when it is actually the top of the 8th.

This isn't funny or entertaining or informative. It's just a ****** thing to say, considering the occasion.

And while I read this kind of **** about Jim constantly screwing up all the time, on the occasions I listened to him lately was fine, and still better than probably 98% of college play by play baseball options.
