Classic old school coach

Frankly, people like Jim Leyland and Haray Caray that abuse their bodies like this and long outlive the years my father was given, who did everything right, just piss me off. That, I suppose, is how I can be against smoking, and those who do it.

Truly a great manager. He was a phenomenal in 1997 guiding the Florida marlins to that World Series. I absolutely loved the victory lap and so did the fans.

As we all should be. That said, life and everything that goes with it, (genetics, etc.) unfortunately can be an uncontrollable crap shoot.

I didn't say I was being rational or fair!

Nor would that be expected in this case. I still find myself at times thinking about the courageous battle your dad fought and your incredible devotion to that struggle. Must be myself getting up there in age!

Good for him. He deserves it. Baseball lifer. My all time favorite manager.
Barely a .500 manager…chain smoking fool who once pinch ran Rick Ruschel for another player. Chronic underachiever in Pittsburgh. Only title purchased for him by Marlins. Cut and ran when he did not have the best players. Disloyal.

Mediocrity personified.

I don't know if I'd call him a HoF manager, but he does get bonus points for cussing out Bonds during a Spring practice.

It’s a whole lot easier to win in NY, LA, St. Louis etc than Pittsburgh and Miami. Loyalty is a two way street. When the team you work for has a fire sale every year/other year, that doesn’t seem a lot like loyalty to the manager and fans either. I grew up a Pirates fan and watched Leyland manage subpar teams for years until they got the players that put them on that run in the early 90’s. Then the franchise let them all walk. I don’t blame him for leaving.

sadly, if he'd have stayed in Pitt or CLE, he'd have never gotten into the HoF..

I like Leyland but I don't think he is HOF worthy. Very few mangers should be in the HOF.

Dave Parker - Career .290 hitter, 339 HR's, 1493 RBI's, 2,712 career hits.
Al Oliver - Career .303 hitter, 219 HR's, 1,326 RBI's, 2,743 hits.

He should have taught him how to throw out a man old catcher on a sharp single to short left.
