I read the earlier thread and was disappointed that it was locked and turned political. I was on campus when he campaigned at State. I saw him in front of the student union talking with a few students but had another class so I didn't stop by. It was early in the primaries and I didn't expect him to get the nomination. I wish I had stopped by to talk with him and been late to class.

About 15 to 20 years ago I was on a flight to Atlanta. It was delayed about 30 minutes because the crew said the plane was being held for a VIP. Carter and 2 Secret Service agents entered the 1st class section and the SS guys took their seats. President Carter walked down the aisle and shook hands with each one of us and apologized for the delay. He was a class act and genuinely cared about people. America lost a great patriot yesterday.

I didn't want to inject politics into this post. I just wanted to say he was a great example to the rest of us as a human being. Godspeed Mr. President.

From everything I have seen about him he seems to legitimately be a good man. He was a bad president. I don’t think anyone denies that. He also appears to have spent his entire life trying to make the world a better place. The world could use more people who make that their life’s goal.

And failing that: just don’t speak ill of the dead.

I see myself as a moderate Republican. Had I been able to vote in the elections of 1976 and 1980, it is unlikely that I would have voted for him either time. I don't, however, see how people can call him "bad", "terrible", or "the worst". Left vs. right ideology aside, he seemed to do ok with the the cards he was dealt. Like any president, he had positive accomplishments along with things that were not a good idea. I think the Camp David Accords alone keep any "bad" or "terrible" tag off of his presidency.

During his presidency I enjoyed the 20% return on a CD.
I did not enjoy the 26% interest on a used car loan. Wait- the 26% interest was during Reagan’s presidency.

You must have been a few minutes before me. I saw him speaking in the second floor of the Union that same day. I stopped and listened to him for a few minutes and then headed off to who knows where.

According to a book I recently read by a man with deep contacts within the white house and secret, Carter was the biggest of hypocrites. He was all apple pie publicly and in front of cameras, but within the confines of the WH, he treated SS and staff worse than red headed step children. The book was by Ronald Kessler and titled: "The First Family Detail: Secret Service Agents Reveal the Lives of the Presidents." Very interesting book.

That's interesting. The SS who protect those people probably know more than most.

Making the world a better place for who? Are you talking about Habitat? MFer hauled *** as soon as the cameras shut off at the build sites. Saw it myself. He was trying to save/build an image.

I'm glad he made it through one last Christmas. A Good southern man, personally.

However, I was also glad his preferred candidate lost on Nov 5th.

Huge falsehood. All Carter did was provide a venue for the cameras to sign a prearranged deal to bribe Israel and Egypt not to fight, and that deal has led to Egypt and Israel to still be the largest recipients in the Mideast of US foreign aid. Sadat was also murdered by muslim extremists enraged by the deal and that has left us with an Egypt that hates us but still gets billions from us.

Try to buy a house, or excuse me, be able to pay for it.
At some point in the late '70s, I knew a guy who was building a house. He got a construction loan for about 14%. By the time the house was finished, the best mortgage he could get was right at 18%. During that period, the Redstone Federal Credit union was paying 15% on savings accounts. At that rate, your money doubled in 5 years.

He was the last president that started a non profit and didn’t use it to enrich themselves.

Now, forming a “charitable” non profit, that is guaranteed no IRS scrutiny, is a golden parachute.

He started his non profit to salvage a legacy as the worst president and remain relevant on the speaking tours. He did enrich himself.

Bad President but a great humanitarian and good person. I think he'd be okay with that as a legacy.
He was a terrible humanitarian. He gave rise to the freaking Ayatollah’s and mullahs of Iran, and they are the worst human rights violators since Stalin, Mao, and Pol Pot. Again, he put his face on a non profit to build houses for the needy to save his awful legacy, and it worked. For that, I will give him credit.
