Hard to picture him at 88. He was a cool dude. Never understood his move from Jacksonville to Furman, even though he had been an assistant there.

On a side note, that many didn’t have privy to

.when Joe left for FSU, Cremins was the top choice to replace him
..in the end the anti-Catholic sentiment with a couple folks there shot down which could have been godly yrs for FU.

Williams had some good teams at Furman. Seems I recall a few shady things associated with Williams with NCAA recruiting issues. Again, he had a pretty good program at Furman.

I remember a center he had who was a bruiser but what a leaper for his size. Man could he rebound. Brunson was his name if I remember correctly.

100% accurate. Terrific coach. The Ice Cream Man in his white suit. Jonathan Moore from Burke HS got $40,000 to go to Furman, which was a lot of money in what, 1974? Coach McGuire was devastated and told him and his mother he could get him a million dollars from the NBA in four years. "Stitch" was a terrific player but it's my understanding things did not end well for him. Hope I heard wrong, if anyone knows.

Joe almost got in a fist fight with Steve Steinweidel at the Coliseum when he was head coach at FSU. What he did at Jacksonville is one of the greatest stories in college BB history

I also seem to recall that Willians did cocaine with a few of his players. Moore had NBA talent, but I don’t think he ever did much with basketball. Decisions have consequences. I’ve made good choices and some not so good in my life. We all have...

The 1st time I saw Jonathan Moore was at the Southern Textile Basketball Tournament in Greenville in March of ‘76. Can’t remember for which Class “C” team he was playing. The “C” division was for the high school guys representing the plants. I always went to the tournament, anyway, but I was “working” some that year. Not quite 16, but my aunt worked in the box office at the old Greenville Memorial Auditorium and she would get me odd jobs there. They paid me in cash, so age wasn’t in issue w/payroll deductions, etc. Moore dominated inside, of course, but I don’t remember if his team won. Some “storied” h.s. players played in that tourney over the years
inc. “Pistol” Pete Maravich. Also, some fantastic college players who had finished their eligibility & even some former pros played for those “Open League” teams. The “regular” A & B squads had some real employees who were outstanding players, but had not made to college to be able to showcase their abilities (or had played some college ball, but were not necessarily household names or well-known outside their communities).

Yeah
my “blue flame” reference wasn’t to Pickens High, of course, rather piling on your waxing comment. That “mane” of hair coming up from his chest was so dark it had a “gunblue sheen” to it!! The “wolfman”, fer sure. Would have hated to clean the shower drain after him!!
