I'm so old, that its impossible for me to watch a PSU game and not half expect to see Joe lead the team out of the tunnel or catch a glimpse of him roaming the sideline. There were more than a few tears shed in my family when the BOT knifed Joe in the back.
I feel privileged to have attended my first PSU game in Joe's first year....his last bowl game and his final spring practice.
It's ironic that while in State College that spring I read about the Sandusky investigation in the Penn Live paper as I had breakfast down town. Yet, BOT members tried to tell us they were blindsided. May they burn in hell.

It wasn't just all of the top ten finishes, it was that those teams were always at or near the very top of the top ten in graduation rates.
Joe used his wins as currency to teach. Hundreds of young men are better because of this. Many of us, who weren't privileged to play for him, emulated him in our careers. It's virtually impossible to calculate how many lives he influenced in a positive way. I always feel sorry for people who talk about Joe as just a football coach. Boy, did they ever miss out.

They were absolutely made aware and briefed on it. Specifically it was a May 2011 BOT meeting that Spanier briefed them (and maybe Cindy Lou Who was in attendance). Those asshat BOTers did not ask one single solitary question. May they all burn in hell twice

So I’m flying down to Miami for the ‘99 game down there with the former SID for Miami and he’s reading the Penn State press guide in the seat next to me. (to SIDs, press guides are like the holy bible). The PSU press guide was enormous btw. So anyway he looks at me with this dumbfounded look on his face and says ‘Joe has had 106 academic All-Americans? How in the hell did he do that?’ I didn’t even bat an eye. I said ‘it’s called the Grand Experiment which means Joe was just as nuts off the field as on’.

I can still see him walking towards me as I was headed to Pattee library one warm late April evening after dinner. He said hello and I was too in awe to even reply.
The last few years at spring practice I would meet up with Coach Sarra....who by that time was confined to a wheel chair. Joe would notice Coach watching and at some point would come over to us to exchange pleasantries with his old assistant coach. I would excuse myself from the group, feeling unworthy to intrude on their conversations.

Some tears in my family…but mostly blood-boiling fury!

That came later. I recall printing out the Freeh Report and trying to speed read it and calling my sons saying "I can't see anything that implicates Joe here." That was my first sense that something very nefarious was going on.
I read the whole thing before watching or listening to anything else about the report. I expected to hear people saying this report has nothing to say about Joe’s wrongdoing. I found out differently very soon after.

I too read the Freeh Report. I read the whole thing and I noted that the main body of the report did not match the Executive Summary. If was obvious they had been written by two different people or groups. The Executive Summary had statements that were not backed up in the main body of the report. In fact the main body of the report had several examples that showed how the state and the Second Mile made most of the mistakes in this case. I remember when the Campus and State College Police investigated Sandusky along with a rep from the state agency responsiple for child welfare and concluded the Sandusky did not exhibt the profile of a pedophile. But most of the media read only the Executive Summary and this became the story.

One note it was not state police, but State College Police and Campus Police and a rep from PA State organization with oversight of Child Welfare. This was before Sandusky retired. The date is in the main body of the report. The results of this investigation are in the annex or reference material at the back of the report.
