and I barely see South Jones. But West Jones and Laurel should both finish high in the overall sports standings for 4A. You also didn't mention that West Jones made a pretty strong run in the football playoffs before losing to Laurel.

i checked, the only sports accomplishment from nej was girls basketball i think in the quarters at the state, and same with south jones, only accomplishment was the mixed doubles in the individual tennis tourney. otherwise, it was mostly divied up between wj and lhs, with i think wj dominating across the boards.

both by the school and by everyone else. In fact, their current football helmets have an LHS logo on them and back in the day, they used to have just an L on them.

I think the Watkins influence comes from the people who attended Gardiner when it was a high school. There are people who talk about graduating from Gardiner up to the early 60s until Watkins was built, and then there are the Watkins people...

I went there, class of 84.

a few years back they changed the name from Watkins to Laurel High School. It was voted on by students i think, and the reason for the proposal of changing the name had to do with indentification purposes for other around the state.

However, even though the name of the school has been changed, the history of Watkins High and the homosexual roots it was founded on will live on.

So, to recap, a county big enough for four Class 4A schools is puffing its chest out about having the worst 4A football champion in 20 years, a cheerleading title and a golf title. A banner year in JC.

I played football for Laurel. It has always been known as LHS to all students and South MS. But for those of you who live in other parts of the State such as "the Delta" and "Tupelo" you wouldn't know that because your heads are so far up your own asses you can't see what surrounds you....

People from Tupelo have their heads up their asses because they don't give a **** about Laurel? Why should they?

I think that pretty much trumps any cheerleading success. Newton County has a state basketball title, two softball titles, a baseball south state appearance, another basketball finals appearance and a deep run in football.

We had a large number of drunks, a good many stoners, whores, and coke users, but I only knew of a few ****. Do you have names? I'd be real curious to hear them. I was actually not aware of the name change, since I stayed in Oxford after graduation at Ole Miss. All my friends who are still around Laurel all moved to the County School Districts. I don't blame them, since the last time I attended a game at Watkins, I felt like I was in a war zone.

That's ludicrous to suggest any title other than a 5A or 4A title is meaningless. Edited to add: This is the dumbest thing to argue about in sixpack history. I don't even remember how this stuff started in the first place.

My senior year (2006) at Madison Central:

Football- made it to the North State Finals
Basketball- won the State Championship
Baseball- made it to the State Championship
Girl's Volleyball- went undefeated and won a State Championship
Powerlifting- won the State Championship
Girl's Soccer- Pretty sure they made it to the championship game
Golf- Pretty- pretty sure they won the State Championship

That was in one school year.

Not to mention the fact that we have won a state championship in every sport we participate in (the school has only been around since 1990).

Not to mention the fact that our arts, and overall quality of education for that matter, is about 30x better than The Free State.

But if you want to keep thinking that a.) anybody outside of Laurel gives a **** about your schools and b.) they "dominate" more than anybody else in the state, then be my guest.

Madison Central winning the 5A state Championship in basketball was unbelievable- especially since we had to beat Provine. That was the one sport that I never thought the MC would ever win a Championship in.

I was the guy chanting YMCA (Not the Village People song) after the buzzer went off. I guess it helps when you have D-I talent like Joe Iupe coming off of the bench for you.

Football should continue to be pretty good as long as we have the Flora pipeline, and baseball should be pretty strong as long as rich people live in Madison.

is way more successful by itself than the entire county of Jones. Just go the misshsaa.com and look it up. Tupelo won state championships in golf, tennis, bowling, cross country and swimming, and finished second in track yesterday. They made it to the playoffs in every sport and are playing for the baseball championship next weekend.

Who knew? Not knocking it, just surprised. I knew it was a HS sport here in Florida but had no idea it was a MHSAA sanctioned sport in Mississippi.

I don't know about Tupelo, but Jackson area schools get free lane-time, uniforms, etc from some bowling assoc. They're trying to get interest from a younger crowd, apparently.

But the baseball coach at Mooreville alone has enough rings to put on each finger, and is working on a set for his toes.

I am going to laugh about that one at least until I eat "supper" and perhaps until I go to "bed".

Do tell. I have not heard of this, but if true, it would be f-ing hilarious.

Watkins was originally created for the students at the surrounding schools that were thought to be homosexual. To keep from having any problems they would send the students to Watkins. It was desegregated from an all gay school in 1985 when they merged a couple of schools together. Everyone around here in Jones County still refers to Watkins(or now Laurel High) as the homosexual school. Truth be known, that was a major non-publicized reason for the name change, to try and shake loose from their history and their accociation with being founded as a gay school. Most everyone around here knows that.

As much as I don't like them, that is complete and utter ********. Watkins has been the only high school in Laurel since at least the mid-70s. The only high school merger that happened in Laurel was when the black high school (the name escapes me right now) was merged into Watkins around 1970.

yeah, it pretty much is only 5A and 4A that count. Look at any top 10 poll in any sport and count the 3A, 2A or 1A schools. There will be damn few, if any.

I'm serious, in fact, their original school colors were purple and pink, and were called the Watkins Fairies. Look it up. There are stories of them being the first school to go exclusively to the shotgun formation in football all the way back in the early 50's because of the distraction and hanky panky of the qb being under center. They said it kept their minds focussed on the game, being in the shotgun that is.

The school you are thinking of patdog, is Gardiner High. I am not sure where this homesexual business is coming from. It sounds pretty crazy. I was born and raised in Laurel and lots of my immediate family graduated from Laurel from the 60s-80s. Watkins was the only High School, besides Gardiner, until desegregation...

My dad went there. The white high school moved from Gardiner to Watkins in the 60s. The black high school I couldn't think of the name of was Oak Park, which was one of the best black high schools in the state before it was merged into Watkins during desegregation.
