Just came back from sled riding with the family.

I grew up saying ‘sled riding’ too but should it be ‘sledding’? Is it a PA thing?

I've been sledding most of my life (don't think I've done it in the last 10 years). In all that time, everyone I knew called it "sledding." The only person I ever met that called it "sled riding" was a kid that moved into the area from either Western PA or Ohio (I can't recall which one).

The Gambits, and all their friends, call it sled riding.

I've always called it sled riding, and I'm from western PA.

We were talking with some parents and the subject of tobogans came up. My wife had never been on one, and none of the current kids had one. Those things were so fun growing up. We had one that was for 3 or 4 people, and we used to cram 6 on the thing. Rarely did all 6 make it down the hill, but it sure was fun. Unfortunately the wood warped on it and it got tossed years ago. My brother has the sled that has the steel rails. That would have been great for today with the hard packed snow. I think I may search for a good tobogan.

How about a car ride. Or do you go caring?
Hmmmmm…. Interesting. I guess if you’re behind the wheel your driving. If you’re in the passenger seat you’re going for a ride. If you’re on your own sled/sleigh you’re sledding. Otherwise, you’re going going for a sleigh ride.

I grew up in Altoona. Home of Mike Reid, John Ebersole, Brent Pry. Galen Hall. Ed Flanagan. Kevin Givens and Brad Benson..We said "sled riding".

I'm going to be feeling this one on Wednesday. The hills were extra bumpy this time out.
Despite the entertainment quotient provided by the Yinzer vocabulary in this thread, upon what snow-friendly vehicle did you actually ride?

Old fashioned sleds with their twin skinny "skis" have to be one of the most poorly designed forms of transportation ever produced.

We used a two person plastic sled from Toys R Us from about 7 years ago. It did not survive this outing.

I must disagree on the old fashioned sled. You could get a big running start with those and they could take a beating. Everything today is plastic.

Some years there is a toboggan track set up in Eagles Mere, depending upon sufficient ice thickness in the lake among other things.

I had a Flexible Flyer sled with steering control. It was phenomenal.

I’ve done that. I recommend it if you’re nearby. Was a tough walk back up the hill at the time though. Maybe they have a tow line now?

GOD BLESS, you'll remember this for the rest of your life and especially before you pass.
Take it from experience...I'm entering the winter of my life and your memorable experiences with your family will live in your heart and mind.

These type of sleds were (and still are) the Cadillacs of sleds WHEN YOU HAVE A GOOD ICE PACK UNDER THE RUNNERS. If it’s just snow on a hill, nothing beats plastic. But if your road turns into a sheet of ice, these sleds are perfection.

correct.
