I can only imagine what Rick Cleveland's column would have looked like.

I wanna say that in 2005, the year that MSU won the SEC Tourney in baseball, they beat Valley by 1 in Starkville. It's not completely crazy to see scores like that. I played at Valley around that time and we lost to Texas Southern in the SWAC title game. Texas Southern went on to the Rice regional and beat number 1 Rice. Rice went on to win the national championship that year. Needless to say, they got *** raped the next two games and were done. Crazy things happen.

JSU used to have some damn good athletes playing for their baseball team. Back in 2000 I believe Michael Goss and Tarnaka Counslor played outfield for them, both of which were Dandy Dozen in 1999. I think Goss was DD in football AND baseball.

I believe Goss signed with Boston a couple of years before I did. They talked about him to me in spring training like I knew the guy. I never played against him, but heard he was a badass. I think I heard that he was in trouble with the law or something. I could be thinking about someone else. JSU actually used to be really good in the 70's and 80's. They would beat some major D1 programs. Most of the big time minority talent would stay at the HBCU's and play. Plus there were more minorities playing baseball back then, so it makes sense.

Jackson St. really does have a solid club this year...not as good as the Southern U. teams with Rickie Weeks (that beat USM in their own regional if you'll recall and actually got a #3 seed in that regional)...but still good. From what I was told by a scout, they're a solid hitting team that runs the bases pretty well and hits the ball on the ground a lot...big coaching improvement with the new guy (forget the name)...don't play great defense but play it a lot better than the rest of the SWAC. They used all 3 of their weekend starters last night against UM if a work buddy is to be believed...evidently trying to get a signature win heading to the postseason.
As a college baseball fan in general and a Mississippian, I like seeing J-State playing good baseball...good football, too, for that matter. Bob Braddy had several pretty good clubs down there during his tenure. It just seems right for them to be back at or near the top....glad to see it especially since we don't recruit against each other.</p>

Yeah, I played against Weeks and was first team all conference with him. Im not saying that being cocky, just sayin. We lost to Southern U my junior year in the SWAC title game. Southern U. had like 8 or 9 guys get drafted. That was by far more than MSU or Ole Miss. They had massive talent and spent a good part of the year in the top 25. That was 2003 and that was the year they beat USM in Hattiesburg. Weeks hit one over the pine trees in left field to open the game in the regionals. I watched him take batting practice during pregame. He would literally hit line drives that got no more than 20 feet off the ground, at most, and they would hit the wall or go over on a line. His hands were unreal and his power was unreal for his size. The scouts were drooling as you would imagine. That's pretty strong when you win the golden spikes award from a HBCU. Dude was legit. The only player that I have played with or against as good or better than Weeks was Hanley Ramirez (Florida Marlins SS). He was on my team in Fort Myers and the son of a ***** is the best I've seen. He would honest to God hit over .400 in the SEC and be a 20 HR guy. He was 19 at the time and the Red Sox number 1 prospect. He was rehabbing down with us for about 50 games. The first day he was taking batting practice and I was shagging fly balls. I thought we had just signed Seranno from Major League and someone had pissed off Jobu. But Hanley wasn't very big.

in high school anyway. Could have played football anywhere, but I can't remember the reason he went to JSU. Grades maybe? He could throw close to 90, also played CF and 1B for L'ville. He was typical of alot of potential pro prospects, pulled everything but had the talent to make contact with the curveballs too. Of course that changes when the competition gets stiffer. He hit on over my head when I was at the RF fence that I couldn't see land...
