Dean clearly out wrestled him and was aggressor most of match. He missed a few relatively easy shots to the legs. Caffey is a very tricky wrestler with good hips and one must take a good angle and finish quickly or Caffey will counter and stall away from the takedown. The two announcers for that match were complete schmucks! That was a match that Dean needed for experience down the road - he will clearly win the next meeting.

what an idiotic thing to say. They were student announcers.

We've seen many times on BTN+ broadcasts that student announcers don't know a great deal about wrestling. @El Jefe, and this board, has had a running joke for years over something the Nebraska student announcers said while covering a PSU @ Nebraska dual.

Uninformed student announcers is something we're used to on BTN+. Calling such announcers "schmucks" is flat-out wrong.

Announcers weren't great, but I am just happy to get the opportunity to watch the match live. Not to long ago that wasn't even an option.

Perhaps schmucks was not the best choice of words. The student announcers can be (or are) very difficult to listen to. We're very fortunate that for the PSU broadcasts, they integrate Byers' feed. It appears that young Alex Facundo was struggling with the announcers as well

I get the student announcer thing and applaud it but it’s hard to believe some kid who wrestled for years in grade school into high school that majors in journalism couldn’t apply for the ‘job’ of student announcing. Was it Jeremiah moody recently on an Iowa broadcast- former wrestler who apparently was top notch..? At least try and learn the basics. Who’s in control. What constitutes a takedown. (A mat return isn’t a TD)😉. Don’t worry about another 10 seconds of riding time. Spend some time around the wrestling room. Heck I’ve announced to myself in my living room and aside from my PSU homerism I think I do great 😌 and I’ve had zero training in public announcing.

Learn the ******* sport if you want to announce. I agree with Facundo - very biased, at least call the match neutral if you're not sure what you're doing. Sorry if I hurt your ultra sensitive feelings by calling out announcers.

The cauliflower ears make it really hard to hear both your fellow announcers and the action :)

The one announcer wasn’t a student announcer and has been broadcasting the sport for a while now (Eric Olanowski).
This isn’t to say that “shmuck” is the word I’d use. But at least one person has spent the better part of a decade in wrestling media.

We're spoiled with Ironhead. I thought the announcers were better than most we encounter on the road. I did think there was a bias (or lack of understanding) on what constitutes stalling. Speaking to this specific match, Caffey is a spoiler and sandbagged his way to a win. All's fair, but a very frustrating style.

Okay Mr. High and Mighty......you have spoken.
Not that Tom needs me to stick up for him, but I believe such comments can only hurt the direction I know Tom and others hope this new Forum will go. I have seen far too much vitriol on several wrestling forums recently, and I hope that all of us wrestling fans will go out of our way to make this and other wrestling forums a great place to spend time with other like-minded individuals.

My dad was a long time Cleveland Browns fan and followed the NFL for years. One of his favorite players was all time great Jim Brown. Slightly before my time but dad would tell me how after a big yard gain Brown would barely make it back to the huddle. He’d be dragging and you thought it was over. Next snap and his number would be called and he’d break one for another big gainer. Jim Brown probably played chess.
Caffey may be cunning as a fox.

Jim Brown was before my time as well. But Franco Harris could get up gingerly at times, then burst up the middle for 20 yards......Caffey is definitely crafty. It's good for Dean to get that look in the regular season. I'm sure he'll have a plan if they meet again.

Like was pointed out by another, Eric O. was a former MSU wrestler. He knows that job and he did well. Despite being an MSU guy he had a lot of research on awareness of PSU guys too. And I didn’t find his take to be biased.

I encourage you to improve your act or quietly step away.

They were pretty bad the whole time on stalling. The were consistently adamant that PSU was stalling badly for a lot of matches but you never once heard them criticize MSU for stalling. And their idea of stalling was simply way off. I get it, homerism and all but it was still annoying.

EDIT - To be fair to the student announcers did know a good deal about wresting and were some of the best student announcers I've heard. The one guy seemed like he had a background in wrestling. The homerism was just a little bit much.

Whoa, it appears we’ve either gone back in time, or we’ve been “moderated.” My whole schpeel about how we’re really one big happy and dysfunctional family is gone with the wind. Oh well!

The sentiment captured on "stalling" was the hot button piece for an otherwise fairly strong commentator from a knowledge point of view. Wearing his "green-tinted" shades had a seemingly knowledgeable wresting announcer allowing his MSU bias to shine through. I offered my take, sometimes loudly, in between sips of hydration and otherwise enjoyed the Blue &. White wrestling.

I did see Jim Brown in 50’s. Being down was different then. Play wasn’t over when the knee hit. It was over when forward progress was determined (or 11 guys were pulled off you) 😂

I’ve watched Caffey at nationals several years now. I call his style, for lack of a better term “funky”. He beats some pretty capable guys with that funky style, but I expect a Dean victory next time around.

I like rooting for the underdog. Caffey kind of fits the mold in my opinion same as Kyle Conel did. Tough kids in rooms without competition or the ability to break out and become really special. I love our guy though you can bet on that.
