Keep Raffo on staff?

I am 100% for hiring someone other than Raffo, but Polk made some good points about his knowledge of everything MSU baseball (except hitting). So does the next coach try to keep him on staff, or just cut everyone loose.

If I was the new baseball coach, I would keep him around as an administrator doing things like running the baseball camp, helping with game day things, organizing the diamond girls, running the foster parent program, and helping with the dugout club.

Raffo has value, just not as a coach.

But, who really thinks he is gonna wanna stick around if he doesn't get the job... As hard as Polk is pushing the guy, he might not wanna stay on in that type of position... I do feel he would be a tremendous asset to hold on to if for no other reasons than the ones Todd mentioned but, I'm just not convinced this is what he wants to keep doing... I think, if he doesn't get the head job, he will be searching high and low for one somewhere else...

is named head coach, they will have to cut him loose unfortunately. It would be a possible conflict of interest since Polk has named him the heir apparent and he is in the running for the head job. The best thing for Raffo to do if he isn't named head coach is to begin his head coaching career someplace else (which is what he should have done a few years ago). He won't have a problem landing a pretty decent job somewhere.

would suggest that a program should never hire anyone but a current assistant.

He acts like coaches never come into a new environment and have to get to know players, administrative processes and systems.

And heaven forbid we do something different than what we've been doing.

That fat piece of **** thinks his proteges are the only ones deserving to coach. This crap irks me to no end.

I'll admit that the Braves are about to be the recipients of all the attention and money I USED to give MSU baseball.

He was the head coach at Georgia Southern. So according to Polk we shouldn't have hired him either initially or in 2001. We should have promoted from within.

Polk left Georgia Southern to be an assistant under Ron Fraser at Miami after the 1975 season. Then in November 1975, we hired him from Miami.

since one of the reasons for pushing for Raffo is because he knows he will keep the present staff intact. I certainly assume this includes McNickle.

his proteges to be the next coach, the selection would be much wider. For all his faults, the man's influence on the game is pretty wide spread. This is about him wanting his way. It's about the power to point his finger and have everyone do what he wants. Cohen would be a Polk protege, as would Kinnison, and an endless list of others.

It is also likely this is about keeping his word. At some point along the line, I find it very likely that Polk has had several "You should/could be the next coach here." conversations with Raffo.

But you're absolutely right that this is about Polk keeping his word. I think he promised the job to Raffo when he came back from Georgia and now wants to make good on that promise. Problem is, he didn't have any authority in the world to make a promise like that and we shouldn't be bound to it.

that he is somewhat trying to protect his staff. Polk knows that if he resigns and just lets someone from the outside come in, they're likely to fire his staff (I wonder why). Polk also knows that if he wants to keep coaching, Raffo and McNickle may not want to work as hard if they know they are going to be kicked to the curb. And he is trying to save face with his staff which, stands a good chance of getting fired regardless. At least he can say, well, I tried to protect you, but Byrne didn't want to keep you.

I think that is only part of it, because the other parts involve selfishness, which have been discussed ad nauseum.

I don't think he is a protege, since he has never coached under Polk, but I would say that Kinneson probably has a little bit of a mutual admiration for Polk at least a little bit.

Actually, that's one reason I like Kinneson- he's from the outside, but he still is close enough to have a view of the program.

The main thing I would be concerned with is Camp season. We make a lot of money off of summer camps and with polk leaveing at seasons end and a replacement not coming in immediately, who is left to run the camps. Croom. Raffo could stay on until a decision is made to hire Cohen run the camps and then pursue jobs elsewhere. How much money do we bring in annually on Baseball camps?

were rather lame. Actually, they were rather sadly humorous as an attempt by Polk for legitimate reasons to keep Raffo.

Besides, it would not be a health situation if Raffo was retained as an assistant under Cohen especially or any other person of similar age.

Polk has made sure that Raffo is going to be the head coach or he is going to be relocating...if we hire someone else, neither wants to be in that uncomfortable situation. Its all or nothing for Raffo

The camps are not an issue. What MSU fan would NOT send there kid to summer camp at MSU cause there is a new coach? As far as the diamond girls, Foster parent, all that crap will fix itself. This is a bad situation Polk has put us in and somebody is gonna have to have the stones to tell him no. I hate to say it but Damn, if Ole Dog one would have only stayed a few more months...

I see two options:

Option 1- delay it until we have a head baseball coach in place.

Option 2- Have former MSU baseball players do it as a "favor". Sign up guys like Will Clark and Brantley. Get some high school coaches, some current players and BAM!- MSU baseball camp 2008.

Make Polk do it as his goodbye to the kids of baseball...they have other HS coaches, players, and the like help anyway... it will be staffed...business as usual as the new regime comes in
