along these lines, USC offered Ryan Boatright, an 8th grader from the western Chicago suburbs last summer, and he accepted. he had actually chosen his college before he had chosen high school.

ive seen him play, and he is damn good. why not offer him? if you, as a coach, think he will help your team, then why not offer him?

one possibility is that the coach and player form a great bond and really like one another and come the player's freshman year, he is already well versed in the coach's offense and defense as well as coaching ways.
the other possibility is that the coach leaves/is canned and the player must decide what to do. this is the 'penalty' they pay for declaring so early, and may help show others that it isnt worthwhile to commit so early.
or the player will change his mind once or more, and the coach will be forced to scramble to keep the player committed. worst case scenario is that the player goes all 'Hopson' on the coach and changes his mind at the end. this will show that coach, and others, that maybe it isnt the best idea to ask junior high aged kids for a commitment.

if the end result is good for all, then early commits will continue. if enough players and/or coaches get burned, then early commits will fall by the wayside.

I honestly do not see much difference than what we did with Hopson. I know it didn't turn out well, but I thought that Stans started recruiting him while he was a freshman or early in his high school career. I guess we just didn't "officially unofficially" offer him.

has peaked early and levels off as he progresses through high school. There was a documentary back in the 80's called hoopdreams where two 8th graders with promise had their 4 years of high school documented. When the movie started both were projected to be big time players. However both leveled off with one going to Marquette and another going to JC then Ark-Little Rock or Ark State. Bottomline is that alot can happen in 4 years.

right, and if this happens, then the coach(and other coaches) will learn from it and realize that it isnt worthwhile to ask for an 8th grader to commit. some have to get burned for a change to happen. or others have to be rewarded for more early commits to happen.

as for hoopdreams, that was a damn good documentary. i cant believe that was 14 years ago.
