Wish him nothing but the best moving forward, unless it’s against us. But it was time.

Who does the search focus on?

I'll admit I'm quite surprised! So, that's good. Now we have Ray hiring again.... so that's bad.
Getting knocked out of the regional kind of cemented it. When you look at the body of work over the past 7 years, nobody who truly dedicated to contending is going to keep that around.

Pleased to see Ray move fast on this. We need to make the right hire this time.

I'm a little surprised. Not that he was released, but how quickly. It makes sense however, if you were going to do it, do it.

Now, has Tanner been preparing for this? Are there guys already researched and under consideration? We really need a home run hire.

There was essentially no justification for retaining a coach who was below .500 through 6 seasons of SEC play. The lack of postseason accomplishments was glaring, but not even being competitive in your own conference is a killer.

Hearing Nick Mingione from Kentucky and Chris Pollard from Duke are near the top of the list. Both are guys that are winning at programs that haven’t had a ton of success in the past. Would be interesting to see what they could do here. Either of these guys would be an upgrade from what we’ve had the past 10 years.

This will be Ray's 3rd time at bat making a hire that is in his sport wheelhouse. Hopefully, the 3rd time will be the charm.

I recall that Ray went hard after Florida's Kevin O'Sullivan and struck out. Then he settled on Kingston, who did not knock anyone's socks off in his prior Head Coaching stints. In fact, he was mediocre in those prior jobs. It kind of reminded me of how Tanner went about in finding Spurrier's replacement. My hope is that Tanner compiled a Top 5 coaches he'd want and go from there. That way, he is not "settling" for someone.

Neither of those guys excite me. It took Mingione 6-7 years to get UK competitive. Pollard is well under 500 in the ACC.

But, that's Kentucky and Duke. You could argue that they did more with less. I have not watched enough of either to have any feel for them.

I don’t know that we’re going to get a name that will excite us that much. A lot of the can’t miss guys are established and probably won’t leave. We could do worse than these 2. I know Duke about shut their program down at one point and UK was always a cellar dweller back in the day.

I hope Kingston took that quempson attending daughter of his with him!
I’m almost embarrassed to ask this, but is this true? My goodness…I get that we should let our kids make some decisions and not force them / control them…but what a terrible look for our university if so.

I completely get that USC may not be the right fit. In fact, it may even be wise not to attend the school where your father coaches. But I would’ve been all for paying for her education to go out of state…really anywhere but our bitter rival.

That is the question. I'm all for a swift firing as long as you have a solid plan in place to bring in the next guy. Minimize transfers and de-commitments.

I'm not sure who we get, but is there any way that we hold on to PJ Morlando? He's signed a letter of intent, but he could chose to go in the draft or look elsewhere to other college baseball programs through the portal.

Monte is a former Ray Tanner assistant - what are the chances that Ray just elevates Monte to full-time status.....

IDK???

If you look at his record and achievements pre-Covid, you would say yes. His 20 and 21 seasons were bad, and Clem does not allow for missing the post season two years in a row. Are the guys Clem is wining with now Monte's? Some of them certainly would be. In 5 full seasons at Clem he never got to a Super. So... IDK? I have no clue really if he can get it done at SC.

My best guess is NO, he's not the guy. Tanner may feel like he should give Monte a chance however.

I think Monte is a guy we could hire if this process goes to crap. I don’t think Ray is dumb enough to hire a coach that failed at Clemson. Not to mention that’s not the reset this program needs.

I mentioned the scenario of Lee being named interim a week or so ago and was met with some resistance here... and all I said was I wasn't opposed to it. Funny what a difference a week makes.

Would a successful minor league coach surrounded by good assistant coaches and recruiters make sense? Aren't minor league coaches tasked with developing talent, and wouldn't they know what it takes for a college player to reach the professional ranks: a goal for many D1 players.

An interesting thought.

There was that pitcher who "decommitted" from USC a few weeks ago. Can't recall that happening before. Another nail in the Kingston coffin.

It's good to keep firing coaches. It's makes ot so much easier to hire the next...
