Holbrook was a no-brainer hire...we didn't have a CWS NC until he arrived and several other programs were after him. Tanner would have been hung in effigy if he allowed him to go. The Muschamp hire was pretty much who was left after 3 top candidates pulled their names out of the hat. From my understanding, the basketball hire was the same. Doubt Pitino was approached, but I know one from SC was....and didn't want to leave his program. Frankly, we are in no way an attractive program in basketball right now....despite the facilities and the money. Martin had a fluke year (mainly due to UNC not wanting Thornwell) and failed to do anything with it.....we are looked at as a one hit wonder, a non-power SEC team in the middle of ACC country who struggles to recruit its instate players and that is all. You have to be honest about what we can reasonably get as any coach wants to succeed and wants to go to a place to do it.
I totally agree.
You are so right that we have to be realistic about who our basketball program can attract to coach.. Some of our fans look at Paris' overall record and are ready to criticize every chance they get. But if they looked closer at his record at UT-C, they would see that his UT-C team's record improved every year, in conference and out-of conference, he was there. And in his first year here, most picked us to be last in the SEC. We finished 2 spots higher than predicted. And he did that after having to replace 70% of the previous year's team, who left due to graduation or transfer (3 of them transferred to UMASS with Martin). By the time Paris came on the job, the better players had already picked other schools. So, Paris basically had only lightly-regarded (to put it nicely) players to get just to have enough players to scrimmage. In light of all that, I think he did a good job in his first year. And that comes from me, one who was not necessarily happy with the hire. But, the obvious cannot be ignored: Paris did a good job in light of the hand he was dealt. And I look at his 2 commitments thus far and I see one player who is rated a 4 star by a couple of services and I see another, a shooting guard, who is rated 45th, 53rd and 64th nationally by 3 services. So, it looks like he is bringing in quality recruits. I'm encouraged with what I've seen thus far (and, again, that comes from someone who was not initially happy with the hire). You know, we might have hired a "diamond in the rough". The critics just need to be patient and look closer at his record at UT-C. Unfortunately, we live in a microwave environment where people want results right away no matter what (such as having to replace 70% of the players after coming in late). Microwaves may work in the kitchen. But, that's about it.
