I noticed UConn had 8 Div III transfers.
One of them had a HUGE sack today, stepped up in 9th as a PH’er and hit a solo shot to opposite field (high off a light pole) to tie it!

Maybe we should also consider mining the best players in Div 2 and 3 also.

This probably ends up being a quality pick-up in the portal. 2-4 with a homer against Ole Miss got my attention. Redshirted in 2022, hit .293 with 7 homers & 31 RBIs in 2023, and .320 with 15 homers & RBIs this year.

Two seasons and a red shirt, so entering his 4th collegiate season. Good size. Seems to have improved as he's gotten older. Fielded .936 with 9 errors (for reference, Kohler was .950 with 6 errors this year).

Can hit a little and has some power. We'll see, but seems like a good addition, even if it ends up being only depth.

You aren’t getting 4th year guys out of the portal for depth. He’ll be expected to come in and make an impact. Unlikely we’ll be able to bring in another guy now that he’s signed. Portal guys want guaranteed playing time, not the chance to compete for it

Your favorite MSU player, Johnny Long was a 5th year grad transfer who came in expecting to be the backup to Highfill after starting at Pitt.

There are plenty of guys out there who will be depth if they get to play SEC ball at a name program.

Is there anything you won't disagree with just to start a debate??

Johnny long sucks. Johnny long was a spot start at Pitt not the starter played in about half the games…. Im sure anyone with Johnny longs talent level would jump at the chance to get on any sec roster….

The reason why we were stuck with long is because no one was coming in to catch out of the portal with high fill here….. No one any good is going to come to compete, they’ll want real playing time not the chance to compete for playing time……

you basically proved my point by saying we got long. That’s the expected talent you can get out of the portal when you have proven returners at spots… if you want to call long “depth” so be it

end of day: this guy wasn’t signed as depth. And if he doesn’t pan out, it’ll be a miss that puts our roster in a bad situation because we aren’t out looking for someone to make him “depth”

So the answer is no, no there is nothing you won't disagree with to get your arguin' juices flowing.

I don't know if the guy was signed as the expected starter or not. And neither do you, no matter how assuredly you type it. All I said was seems like a good addition, even if it turns out to be only depth. I'm sure nobody involved wants him to be only depth, but that may be what happens.

And you're welcome. I know you enjoyed getting to **** on Johnny Long for a couple more paragraphs.

Might not look like it, but he could be one of the best players in the portal this offseason.

That guy is selling services to kids and so full of **** he stinks. He's talking to Juco and NAIA coaches I guess. Show me a HS recruit that doesn't play travel ball signing with an SEC school. Juco guys are going more small school or nowhere now due to the portal. Not a ton of great Juco position players anyway. That's a fact! Juco takes a beating in every sport due to the portal.

While I don't agree that travel baseball is no longer the path to college baseball, I do agree with the fact that the talent has been pushed down due to the transfer portal. A lot of players who used to be D1 guys out of high school are now going to DII or JUCO. And those who used to go to DII out of high school are going DIII and NAIA. DI teams don't have to develop anymore when they can just use the lower levels as a farm system of sorts.

I just got done going through the recruiting process with my son. He just signed with a DIII team with the hope of being able to transfer up in a couple of years. Lots of research went into who teams were recruiting, checking out the landscape, and how he stacked up. There is no question the transfer portal has changed things in the recruiting world.

Truth is in the middle. High school recruiting is still the majority of the recruiting done, but transfers are more significant. Duh, right?

But I certainly agree to be skeptical of the hot takes from people who make money off the industry. This guy is probably correct about the majority of travel ball players, who are above average but not D1 caliber. They probably should be looking at D2, D3 or NAIA. But that's not the fault of travel ball or the portal, it's just reality. The best players will still get the opportunities. And he's also selling his training system, so he's pushing that you don't need to pay for travel ball. Not saying which is right or wrong, but it's clear who this guy is marketing towards.

If it was up to top College programs, High School baseball wouldn’t exist. They care absolutely zero about what a player does in a HS baseball game.

You're not going to play any college sport without going through the travel ball process period, especially D1.

Depends on what it is you're 'doing' in that high school game. If you're gassing 90+, raking, hitting bombs, flashing leather, or hosing people, yeah, they do care what you do. A game is a game, and good players are good players.

Problem is, youth to high school to college to pro doesn't look the same at all. Formats are all totally different, and in general, the good players are generally found at showcases around equal talent. I think that is the point you're trying to make, am I right?

I would say the showcase process, not the travel ball process.

But at the end of the day, I would agree that the travel ball process is the best way to get the live at-bat reps needed and pitching reps, obviously. But it's not as effective for defense. But there again, metrics will tell you defense isn't as valued. Thus, you have travel ball. Then, you add in parent's entertainment value, and you get weekend tournaments.
