Looking to the all-knowing board for advice on a new laptop. Not looking to break the bank but need a new laptop to do basic browsing (mostly reading this board) and running Microsoft Office package. No online gaming or streaming really. I don’t want a tablet and don’t need all the bells and whistles. Just looking for something in the $500 range. Recommendations appreciated.

I've always had good experience with Lenovo, they're not necessarily flashy but built like tanks...durable and reliable. Lenovo Idea pad 3 would be in that range. If you're used to multiple external monitors definitely pay attention to the available ports. Good luck.

I have a laptop for work along with a dock system and 2 monitors. It's super convenient. Work from home with just the laptop, then plug it into the dock for use of the monitors.

We are in the market for a new laptop also, so this thread is good timing. But I will grab a couple monitors too that I can hopefully retrofit for my work laptop and personal.

I was thinking about 32 years old and about 5'7, 135 pounds with brunette hair and a nice pair of boy toys.

Thank you for the recommendations. I think I’m taking your suggestion ManxomeLion.
You really ought to just go to Craigslist and purchase a Dell Latitude. You'll get an I7 processor, 500 GB Disk, 8 GB RAM, and Windows 10 or 11 PRO, which comes with the full Office Suite, for about $200 or less. Tell the guy you want the Operating System with Office downloaded to a thumb drive in case your hard drive fails so you can reload the system. Tell him you want to have him reload the software so you know how to do it from the thumb drive. You should bring a thumb drive with you to make the transaction.
These were typically engineering workstations and will last forever. These were built when Dell still cared about quality for their higher end machines.

I haven't looked for a while, but you could find reconditioned laptops on Walmarts website and I would guess similar stores.

Have you thought about what size laptop? 13", 15" or a large 17" Do you plan on traveling occasionally?
I have a 13" connected to a 23" monitor---makes traveling easier ;)
