The crazy thing about NET rankings is the top is the top and the bottom is the bottom, but the middle is like throwing darts at a dart board.
Instead of being done with computer, NET must rely on an adding machine.I know MSU just took us to the wire, but I can't see any rationale for having them ranked higher than us in the NET. Just another example for how the NET is garbage. They are higher than us in the NET but are a bubble team, at best, while we are a projected 5 seed.
I'm just not sure why the NET exists. Presumably, it's used to differentiate between similar teams, but as you pointed out, the middle of the rankings is gibberish.
I could see having some crazy disparities early in the season, before anybody really knows what kind of team they have or how good a team's opponents really are. But we've now played a full season and MSU is 8-10 while we are 13-5 in the same conference and have beaten them twice, at our place and their place, . There just aren't that many variables left out there which could explain why they are 7 places higher than us. It's a completely bogus algorithm that needs to be revamped. We clock in at 49.
Oh, Mississippi State is 42.
