Read a story about a Maryland/UNC game during the Jordan era when Maryland despite being without their best player went down to Chapel Hill and gave the Tarheels all they wanted before going down in a hard fought game.
After the game Dean Smith in response to a reporters question said "I've always said you could play a great game without a great player."
Driesell's response was the most Lefty answer ever:
"I COME DOWN HERE WITH A TEAM THAT'S MISSING ITS BEST PLAYER, HE'S GOT 3 ALL-AMERICANS AND WE STILL ALMOST BEAT THEM AND THAT'S THE BEST THING HE CAN SAY? WHAT A BUNCH OF CRAP THAT IS!"
Driesell also once said if Maryland won the ACC Tournament he'd fasten the trophy to the hood of his car and drive thru the entire state of North Carolina blowing his horn non stop.

He was a premier coach, even if he never won a national championship. He lifted every program he took over. What he did at Davidson was remarkable and I often wish he had stayed there because they played their biggest games in Charlotte.

Those were fun times as there was always more happening than the game and the league was like a weekly soap opera TV series on Raycom/Jefferson Pilot.
No ACC coach outside of the North Carolina schools won a national until Gary Williams in the current millennium. The non-North Carolina schools are irrelevant in that conference.
Well, Virginia followed suit not that long ago. Florida State was big enough and bad enough to assert themselves in football for awhile, and they seem resurgent. I think it's up to each school to establish its own relevance. We had done so in basketball until that ascendancy was preempted. There was more where that came from.
