I do appreciate what Howland did for us, nobody can deny that it was a monster having to bring us out of the Ray abyss. But it’s time to tell him to retire, Cohen.

John, if you want to fix this and not let the program completely die then we need the following things and we actually have a template to follow to accomplish this, because Auburn had a similar fanbase issue: fanbase that didn’t give a ****, but a new venue for the program. They went out and hired Pearl. Here’s what we need and Auburn needed:

- Top flight recruiter
- A coach that would rally the fanbase showing up at non hoops events and getting your non-diehard folks engaged
- Someone with a winning pedigree
- Someone that the blue bloods weren’t going to take a chance on yet

Guess what? This has worked tremendously for them. It can for us too. Don’t hire Andy Kennedy or a Richie Riley. Cohen, give Sean Miller a call. 17 optics 17 hiring a “MSU-type”. Promote the **** out of the new Hump, get some new uniforms that match the 90s and early 00s like Tennessee and others have done. Let’s win some ****.

The State fans that want Andy Kennedy hired should be forced to build the new Hump

Bob Richey is a good name.
Grant McCasland at North Texas
Chris Jans at New Mexico State (baggage)
Chris Mack
If you want an assistant who probably know how the recruiting game works and knows the region - maybe see what you think about Bill Armstrong. Former Ole Miss asst who is now Will Wade's top assistant.

Saw someone else also mention Sean Miller too. Could he be (on some scale) for us what Pearl has been at Auburn?

No on Sean Miller. If Howland frustrated you with his exclusive man to man defense then Miller would just continue that trend as he plays strong man pretty much 99 percent of the time.

Also Arizona fans mentioned the exact same things that UCLA fans said about Howland. His offense gets slow and bogged down, not a lot of movement, lot of late shot clock shots and doesn’t take a lot of 3s.

No more retreads please

Here’s mine:
Miller
Matt McMahon
Richey
Golden (San Fran and former Pearl assistant)

I’d say Miller could be the same for us. Auburn hadn’t made it to the tourney since 03 when they hired Pearl, that program was stuck in the mud for years. We at least have a booster base that’s still engaged.

No doubt it is time. No hard feelings and appreciative for what he has done but enough is enough.

At this point there is no point talking about if he is giving us a maximum effort or phoning it in. This is year 7 and all that matters is results. He has been given numerous passes over the years. The first 3 years we were emerging from the rick ray abyss, then it was bad luck with players and this and that resulting in several 'give him another year' moments. This year was supposed to be the defining one. He finally got a good group of talented players and came into this season as a solid favorite to make the tournament. But what we have seen so far is more of the same things that has defined, or one might say plagued, his tenure. Living just outside the bubble, winning some but unable to maintain momentum, underachievement.

This was defined as a make or break season and we must hold to that. Barring a miracle it is looking like it is 'break' and we should be planning now for his departure and if things end like they are headed with another invite to the NIT we say no thanks, wish him well, thank him for his contribution and move on.

Reading about Richey more - he's never made a tournament. Not sure if that's a requirement but you would hope you would hire someone that can make a tourney even at a mid major.

Wouldn’t hate that either. We need someone that’s going to grab our fanbase by the hand and show them how to get excited. It’s Miller Time.

247 seems to be thinking we’re heading toward letting Ben retire with grace, that’s a good step. We have a big opportunity here to jump up.

Read through this thread.

Look at the number of people with strong opinions who think they are right.

The only requirements should be hiring the absolute best coach we can get.

Hopefully we hire a firm who is good at that and they narrow it down to abt 4 candidates and Cohen can real the best one in.

This ^^^^^^ Even if he gets caught he leaves us with talent. Doubt the NCAA persues anyone going forward though.

I want to be the SMU of college basketball. National championship or bust. Death penalty is collateral damage. We at least have baseball which most people don’t

Kyle Smith at Washington State. He’s regarded by some as the smartest coach in basketball. Heavy in analytics. Washington State was a raging dumpster fire when he took over (hadn’t won’t a conference tournament game in over 10 years and hadn’t won more than five conference games in a season since 2012, and in his third year, he has them on the bubble for the NCAA Tournament. They’re 7-3 in Pac 12 play and 14-7 overall. He has spent most of his coaching career on the west coast, but he was head coach at Columbia for about five years. Also coached at San Francisco for three years before taking the Wazzu job. And hey, we already took their football coach. Might as well take their basketball coach too.

ETA: Here’s a quote from an article about Smith.
“Smith is also known for his strong analytical background that has been huge in creating advantages for his programs, which otherwise might be behind the eight-ball from a resources standpoint.”

Sean Miller should be the 1st call. Gregg Marshall 2nd. Time to go balls deep and make MSU basketball exciting again.

Exactly we have a stable program now. No off the court issues like when we were trying to replace Stans and had to settle with Ray.

Having a boys basketball coach could only help. Don’t have one now-haven’t had one in 3 years. Ours retired but kept showing up to collect a check

I'll throw a name out that most might not have heard of - Jerome Tang. He's the associate head coach at Baylor and has held that title since 2017. He's been on Scott Drew's staff since the early 2000's. As far as I can tell, he is at least partially responsible for recruiting the guys that helped them win the title last year. I've watched Baylor play a few times this year and they are fun to watch. Not saying this is the guy but someone that I think should at least get a look.

Bc he’s had two tournament appearances in 15 years like Olive Branch said. How would that fire the fanbase outside of Winston County up at all?

The other SEC teams have hired much better coaches since then. It is a lot harder to win an SEC game now than in the past. If we don't hire a really good coach it will be Howland 2.0

I'd put odds at 50-50 the next coach won't be as good as Howland has been. But I'd much rather take a chance on someone else, than to hire Kennedy who really would be Howland 2.0.

Kelvin Sampson is not leaving Houston. He’s coming off a Final Four, is currently ranked in the top 10, they play in a brand new arena and they’ll be going into the Big XII in a couple years. He’s got it made there.

I know Bill Armstrong from working camps at Birmingham Southern when he was there. I'd rather hire Mitch Cole (asst. at Samford now, but former head coach after Duane Reboul at BSC and was an asst. at Texas A&M) over Armstrong.

Honestly, anyone that isn't named Ben Howland at this point.
