82 to 86 with reserve duty after, Topside Petty Officer in Charge of Combat recovery operations on CVN69, The Eisenhower, the second of the Nimitz Class Carriers. . Spent many many long days and nights pitching and catching off the coasts of Lebanon, Israel, Syria and Libya.
The Ike is back on station patrolling the dangerous waters of the Eastern Med and Red Sea as everything simmers over there.

I also avoided the draft during Vietnam. I enlisted in Sep '71 and was discharged in May '75, the day before the Vietnam War was declared over. I had nothing to do with that. Army MP at Ft. Meade and in Germany.
Navy. USS ST LOUIS(LKA-116) homeported in Long Beach, CA. One deployment to WESTPAC 1972. Gulf of Tonkin, Gulf of Siam, Hong Kong, PI, Okinawa. 26 years in the Reserve in Convoy units and Naval War College. The Med, North Atlantic, Portugal, Korea. Called back to Active Duty to work on Pacific Fleet staff.

Far and away my favorite of the SNCOs. MSgt is concerned with their Airmen. SMSgt is kind of an admin position unless they’re a diamond.
Chiefs can be amazing of trash. It’s a crap shoot.
Let me say it is humbling to read about the service to our country each of my fellow vets have rendered. One thing we all learned while serving, every job in the military has a part in mission accomplishment. I salute all of you.
When I hear somebody talking about "working 24/7" I'm always tempted to ask what branch they were in.
Graduated and commissioned @ PSU Sept 11, 1969. Served in destroyers, cruisers both Atlantic and Pacific. Retried Oct 1 1989. Always be a sailor.

Basic Training and AIT were at Fort Ord in Monterey, California. Fortunately I was never called up for active duty during the Vietnam War which makes me think of myself as not quite a real "veteran", even though I do qualify as one.

My dad’s unit left the day before. He slept in the barracks and would have been a goner had he stayed another night.
