Looking ahead: Rattler and Doty in 2023?

When Rattler announced his transfer here, it was widely believed this would be a one-year rehab project to boost his NFL draft stock. Come in, put up some stats and then take off to the pros. Safe to say, that has not gone according to plan. Which leads to an interesting situation for next season.

Is it possible to have both Rattler and Doty on the roster next season? Probably not. If Rattler stays, Doty likely transfers I would imagine. Doty has patiently bided his time and battled through injuries.

Rattler could say "to heck with it" and reason that this is as good as it's going to get in college and jump to the NFL, even if only as a UDFA. Or he could come back or he could transfer. I don't see transferring as much of an option. I doubt he would have any P5 takers, and dropping down seems to be waste of time at this point in his career.

It begs the question, though, would the coaches want Rattler back for 2023? Not that they don't like him, but in the best long-term interest of the team, what makes more sense? They'd have to be very confident that Rattler would perform much better with a full season under his belt in this offense. Or maybe they aren't all that confident in Doty and want Rattler back just for the experience factor.

Whatever the case, I would imagine we won't have both QBs on our roster after this season.

As I have been saying, it's in the best interest of the program to give Doty some meaningful playing time. May not be in Rattler's best interest, but it is what's best for the team. Let's see what Doty can offer in terms of staying in the pocket when possible and having the elusiveness to scramble and be a running legitimate threat when necessary.

Agreed. I have been saying the same. Give Doty some meaningful snaps. The next two weeks would be the perfect opportunity.

Maybe Vandy. I have a feeling the Mizzou game will be a fairly tight contest.

Interesting question. Of course we would have hoped that Rattler would be ready to sail off to the NFL draft after a stellar year. And he’s been better than most of our situation last year for sure…but nowhere near the NFL draft.

My guess is that Rattler transfers to a wide open group of 5 school where he can play without having to think so much (not a knock on him at all, and a slight knock on Satterfield). Put up great numbers at that level and you have a chance at the NFL. That happens every draft.

However, I don’t think both players will stay for next year. We shall see.

What if they both leave, how are the other quarterbacks doing, I haven't heard a word? I actually think Doty may be an
upgrade from Rattler.

Good question, wish I had a crystal ball. Doty probably needs some meaningful snaps to keep his interest or maybe he’s a true team guy. Rattler would probably hit the portal, did it already if he thinks he can upgrade his stock

So you all think pro teams are going to alter their very difficult and extensive playbooks to accommodate someone. Playing in a wide open dink and dunk offense which inflates numbers is not going to sway scouts. They know what they are looking for and pros think they can coach up any prospect. They will draft him on his potential this year or next. Running to another school won’t change that. He would be better off staying here and improving in a pro style offense.

This question looms larger and larger, particularly with Rattler's resurgence in the final 2 games. If he does well again in the bowl game, does that boost his stock enough to go pro as a mid-to-late round pick? Or does it make him want to come back for another full season to try getting first-round status?
